In recent years, however, MOH presentations have also been made for civilians who have shown exemplary heroism while working with or support of the USAF. In2013, Maj. Gen., Randy Hawkins presented an MOH award to local business owner Verna Knight for her donation of $10,000 towards purchasing new aircraft for use by South Carolina National Guard units deployed in Afghanistan. This year's edition of Soldier's Day celebration will be held on April 14th from 9am-4pm at Gaffney Regional Airport . There will be several displays honoring current and past servicemen and women from all branches ofthe USAF throughout the day - including a flyover by an Arleigh Burke class destroyer conducted by Fighter Squadron 214 (VA-6) from Naval Station Norfolk . Gaffney, South Carolina is a small town located in Richland County, South Carolina on the Savannah River. The population was 5,521 at the 2000 census. Gaffney is home to A&M University and the Gaffney Army Depot. It was first settled by English settlers in 1784. The present-day community of Gaffney was founded in 1871 by Gifford Pinchot and others as a result of their efforts to settle a land claim near Columbia, South Carolina. The town had its start when General James Hinchcliffe's 1st Artillery Battalion (1LT) arrived in December 1800 from Charleston to help garrison Fort Moultrie on Hilton Head Island during the War for Southern Independence. Heading north along the Savannah River they came upon Indian villages abandoned by their previous occupants due to friendly fire from white soldiers; this gave rise to the name "Gaffney" meaning "fireplace." In 1835 David Hughes built his house where Elm Street now stands; he became one of Gaffney's earliest residents and served as Postmaster from 1836 until 1840. In 1861 John Witherspoon started farming here with five cows and twenty acres of land that he donated to Gaffney Township trustees for use as a school ground and pasture for his hogs which increased local production of cottonseed oil so much that it became known as "Witherspoon Oil." The town's first store opened in 1872 when J.B. Caldwell opened up what would become known as Caldwell's Store & Mercantile on Main Street adjacent to A&M University; this store operated until 1940 when it was replaced by First National Bank across Orange Avenue from A&M University which continues today as part of First National BankSouth Carolina branch operations. On October 15, 1886 Mrs. Sarah Ladd bought property southwest of Gaffely’s Chapel on Cedar Hill Road from Ephraim Suggs who had been living there since 1793 with his family while being employed by Colonel John Forbes at Fort Moultrie opposite Hilton Head Island; Mrs Ladd named her new home “Dunn” after her brother-in-law Drury Dunn (1762 – 1865), an early settler in SC colony who also contributed materially towards building Forts Moultrie and Columbia - Dunn House still stands today within sight of campus.. In addition to agriculture, early industry included sawmills, grist mills, tanneries and flour Mills; these have all disappeared or changed hands over time with little remaining evidence demonstrating their existence apart from some ruins or foundation remnants dating back to the 1800s including erection blocks for two tannery buildingsdamaged during Hurricane Hugo in 1988 which remain standing overlooking downtown Gaffely along Cedar Hill Road although not opento visitors despite repeated visits).
