The United States Air Force deployed gift history in Gaffney, South Carolina on Nov. 5, 1948. The gifted items were placed within the USAF Museum and are now on display. The museum is open to the public every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and admission is free. On Decatur Day, 1948, airmen from the Air Force Base of Charleston took part in a fly-in and fly-out at Goose Island Naval Air Station (GINAS). Fifty-six gifts were delivered by C-47 Skytrain aircraft to GINAS during this event. Included among these presents was an American flagstaff with a golden star and seventeen silver stars for each wingtip; an additional three flags for use as flying saucers; two Curtiss P-40 Warhawks; one De Havilland Mosquito fighter pilot’s cockpit instrument set; three sets of insignia for service personnel of various branches of the military including Army Rangers and Marines; a copy of Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms speech; four cereal boxes filled with dog food pellets that had been sent as Christmas gifts to GAF officers and enlisted men stationed in Europe during World War II; five small boy tents Recreation Camp Instructor kits complete with all necessary accessories such as mosquito netting, bathtub ginas (for showers), toilets, noise cancelling headphones, mess kit and more.; ten Service Medal pins made out of brass or bronze with enameled gold designs commemorating service members who have died while performing their duty with the U S A ; six Decatur dolls made by local children which were given as Christmas present to family members serving in Japan during World War II.; seven white Lead Bead necklaces made by local ladies which represented different branches of the military including the Navy Seabees which had built many islands in Gaffney during WWII.; one box filled with candy bars sent as Christmas gifts to members of both services stationed overseas during WWII.; thirteen pairof half dollar coins minted at Philadelphia Mint between 1945 – 1946 depicting servicemen or women who have lost their lives while serving in World War II
