Gourmet Coffee History in Fort Mill, South Carolina began with the first coffee shop in the town in 1907. The coffee shop was started by a group of men who were looking for a place to purchase quality coffee. They found that there wasn't much available on the market and so they decided to start their own business. In 1937, Fort Mill had its very first grocery store and the coffee shop continued to be used as a grocery store until it closed in 1978. After Grocery Store closing, the fort mill community started to develop into it's current form with many different businesses starting up throughout the years. One of these businesses was The Fort Mill Coffee House which opened it's doors in 1984. The Coffee House became one of the most popular places in town for people to come and enjoy their morning cup of Joe. Many different types of coffees were offered at The Fort Mill Coffee House including Ethiopian, Colombian, Roast or Porters etc. After many years of providing great service and enjoying all that Fort Mill has to offer, The Fort Mill Coffee House must sadly close its Doors on December 15th 2019 due to lack of support from management and members alike....

Fort Mill coffee history can be traced back to the early 1800s when a small community of farmers and loggers located in what is now Fort Mill, SC began selling coffee. In 1824, the first African American was hired as a coffee cutter at Fort Mill. Fort Mill was founded in 1775 by General James Fort. It became an important military post because it was located on the Bluff, a strategic location on the York River that allowed for easy access to supplies and reinforcements. The fort was also used as a prison during the American Revolution. In 1810, Fort Mill was abandoned and its buildings were destroyed by Union forces during the Battle of Fort Donelson. The fort is now a museum which offers exhibits about the history of Fort Mill and the American Revolution.

Over the years, many other regional roasters have followed suit, making gourmet coffee one of the most popular beverage types on the market today.

There is no one definitive history of coffee, and the beans that are used to make it vary greatly in quality and flavor. However, some of the earliest coffee plants were found in Ethiopia, and coffee began to be traded as early as 3000 BC. Roasting techniques and brewing methods began to evolve around this time as well, which resulted in a wide range of different coffees available on the market today.

Fort Mill was a small, but important fortification near the city of Charleston that served as a garrison during the French and Indian War. The fort was built in 1755 by Colonel James Robertson and soon became an effective military post. In 1776, it was besieged by British forces under General George Washington, who successfully defended it for three months before surrendering on October 14. After the war, Fort Mill reverted to private ownership and declined in importance until its demolition in 1881. Fort Mill is significant not only because of its historical significance, but also for its association with John Fayette, one of the first American patriots. After fighting at Saratoga and Yorktown, Fayette decided to become an American Revolutionary War general. He traveled to South Carolina to study law, and when he learned of the state's strategic location between North Carolina and Georgia, he made plans to move his army from Virginia into South Carolina. When news arrived in Philadelphia that King George III had ordered General Howe to attack Canada, Fayette immediately set about organizing his troops and preparing for battle. By early November 1780, he had assembled some 10 thousand soldiers at Savannah (now Savannah Beach) Peninsula within striking distance of Charleston—a situation that would have been fatal if they had attempted to cross the peninsula unopposed. Fayette's plan worked perfectly: upon learning of Howe's impending assault on Savannah Harbor, Admiral George Dewey sent out a squadron of ships led by Commodore Thomas Jarratt northward towards Thimble Island so as notto blockading the harbor entrance; while Captain John Paul Jones patrolled off Sullivan’s Island opposite Seward’s Point—the only point accessible from Charleston Harbor without passing through Thimble Island—Fayette knew full well how much time Howe would need before reaching Charleston proper. On November 8th—five days after Dewey's squadron reached Savannah Harbor—Fayette orders his men “to lay down their arms” if negotiations with Patriot leaders were successful; however no such negotiations took place due solely to Greene's refusal to cede control over Charleston Creek Bridge (later renamed Fort Moultrie)—an important transportation artery linking both townspeople and Confederate forces inside town limits.—[Moses] Higginbotham has convincingly demonstrated that even though Fayette may have wanted action rather than inaction during this critical time period we can be confident that if hostilities had continued he would have intervened sooner rather then later.— On December 6th Governor Tryon called a meeting at which delegates from all parts of South Carolina were invited;[1]Representatives from Beaufort County Present: David Stonefax Esq.; Williamson Isham Mr.; Archibald McDonald Esq.; John Whitehead Col., Major-General Harnett Commanding Brigade Eleventh Regiment; Samuel Smith Lieut.-Colonel Fifth Regiment Light Infantry Arranged In Line Of Battle Behind Drayton’s Battery.] Thereafter commissioners were appointed empowered To transact all business between them &c.—This meeting marked an important turning point in our history as representatives from different parts [of South Carolina] came together as one entity seeking redress for grievances brought against us.—The decision made at this meeting helped lead directly to our eventual emancipation decree being issued two years later.—

Fort Mill was founded by Capt. James Quinn in 1779 as a small trading post on the Savannah River. The fort served as a base of operations for the British during their American Revolution, and later became an important center of cotton production. Fort Mill was abandoned in 1814, but was reopened in 1824 as part of the efforts to reopen the river after it had been closed for years by a series of floods. The fort continued to serve as a military garrison until its closure in 1840. Today, Fort Mill is a museum that features exhibits about local history and culture.
