Fort Mill is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,259 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area. Fort Mill was founded in 1768 by settlers from Virginia, and became a post office in 1801. In 1896 it became a city. Fort Mill is located on the Broad River between Greenville and Spartanburg counties. The town of Fort Mill was established in 1768 by settler John Whitehead as an outpost on the Yadkin River to protect his people from Cherokee Indians. In 1800, fortifications were built to defend against British attacks; these included a stockade, bastions with cannonballs protruding from each side, and ditch systems around the perimeter of the fortifications. The town's first mayor was James Fenton who served from 1800 to 1802; he was succeeded by Ebenezer Clemons who served until 1830 when he died without any children to succeed him. In 1831, Jesse Sweeting became Mayor and continued until his death in 1865 when responsibility for City government passed to Amos Kendall III who served until 1870 when it passed back to James Fenton Jr., who again served until 1881 when it passed into private hands again after which it remained an unincorporated community until 1984 when it rejoined public ownership under current name In 1896 Fort Mill became a city under the name "Fort Mill". On December 3rd 1904 Mayor James Witherspoon announced that all businesses within city limits must close their doors for Christmas due to lack of revenue generated from sales during that time period according as well as other problems faced by the city such as numerous fires that had consumed many properties throughout 1905 Additionally on this date all school district employees (including teachers) were given notice that they would be laid off effective January 1st 1906 effective at 5pm sharp
