Fort Mill is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,468 at the 2010 census. Fort Mill was founded in 1820 as a trading post on the confluence of the Broad and Post Rivers. It became a separate town in 1907. The first settler in what would become Fort Mill was James Hance who arrived from Tennessee in 1819. He built a cabin on an old millrace and named it "Hance's Mills". Hance had come to trade goods with the Cherokee Indians and he thought that his new home would be more comfortable than their temporary lodges at White House Creek on present-day Merryville. By 1830, Hance had erected two other buildings: a storehouse and an chapel known as "The Evangelist" or "First Baptist Church". In 1824, John Hardee established himself at Fort Mill as one of the leading entrepreneurs of Spartanburg County. Hardee operated several stores and taverns along the Catawba River before becoming one of the most successful merchants in antebellum South Carolina. In 1827, Hardee donated land to create what would become Fort Mill after consulting with General Andrew Jackson about creating a military post adjacent to his new territory north of Charleston. When Jackson ordered Major George Pickens to march southward through Georgia during the American Civil War in 1861, Pickens discovered that there were no military installations within Confederate territory so he decided not to move forward beyond Interstate 95 until he received orders from higher up – which never came. As a result, much valuable Confederate property lay unprotected within Union lines until 1865 when Union general Robert E Lee destroyed all traces of Confederate infrastructure including Ft. Mill without warning its inhabitants thereby sparing them from destruction by Confederates seeking revenge for earlier losses at Manassas Junction (now Arlington Heights) and Fredericksburg (now Prince William County). fort mill today still bears some evidence of this event as portions of Main Street are now lined with cinderblocks created by Lee's engineers when they rebuilt Ft Military Road around 1870-1871 following his victory over Union forces at Gettysburg parkland famous for its large concentration of cannons then located just east off I-95 near modern day Bethesda . Fort Mill was a small fort built by the British in 1776 to help protect Charleston from French and Indian attacks. The fort was abandoned in 1812, but it has been preserved as a museum and tourist spot. Fort Mill is located about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Charleston on South Carolina's Eastern Shore. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now South Carolina were traders and travelers who passed through the area on their way to or from Georgia and the Carolinas. In 1664, Englishman John Davenport named a bay on which he erected a trading post after himself, for which he received an annual grant of land from the Crown. In 1776, General James Longstreet ordered his forces to build a fortified outpost at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island in order to better protect Charleston from potential French and Indian raids. The fort was built over a period of several months and was manned by around 100 soldiers. The British also built another small Fort Moultrie near present-day Mount Pleasant on December 7, 1779 during the American Revolution in order to keep control of the mouth of York River between Cape Fear and Camden counties. The original fort was destroyed by fire in 1812, but it has been preserved as a museum. After America won her independence from Great Britain, General George Washington ordered that all British possessions along the southeastern seaboard be emptied except forfort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island which remained under British control until 1814 when it fell into American hands following its bombardment by Admiral Thomas Graves operating out of Norfolk Naval Station Gulfstream IV off Jacksonville Beach Florida.. It wasn't until October 1st 1814 when General Robert Ewell capturedMoultrie without battle after besieging it for 444 days with no relief being allowed into the fortress . Fort Mill was a small settlement in South Carolina founded by the British during the American Revolution. It was located on the banks of the river Oconee, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Charleston. The fort was built to protect British traders and colonists from attack by Indians. The fort fell into disrepair after the Revolutionary War, and it was abandoned in 1790. In 1807, it was leased to Georgia slaveholders for use as a plantation house. Afterward, it reverted back to Indian ownership and was abandoned again until 1880, when it became part of Fort Mill National Historical Park.
