Fort Mill is a small town in the southern portion of South Carolina. It is known for its military history, and particularly for its Fort Mill Air Force Base. The base was established in 1941 as part of the United States Army's newly activated Air Forces. It became an air force station in 1947 and then an air force command post in 1951. In 1956, it was renamed Fort Mill Air Force Base, effective January 1, 1957. The base has been home to various fighter and bomber units over the years, including the 5th Fighter Wing (1957-1972), 4th Bombardment Wing (1973-1978), 9th Bombardment Wing (1979-1981), 8th Airlift Wing (1982-1985), 2nd Bombardment Wing (1986-1988) and 7th Missile Squadron (1989-1991). The present 611st Intelligence Squadron was formed at Fort Mill AFB on October 15, 1998. In 1775, General James Wilkinson built Fort Moultrie on the confluence of the Santee and Rapidan Rivers in what is now Anderson County. In 1814, Colonel John Cushing erected a new fort at what is now Fort Mill to protect settlers retreating from Indian attacks. On September 25, 1828, Fort Mill was renamed for General Andrew Jackson after he won his first presidential election as President of the United States. The town was established in 1830 when farmers began to settle around the fort. By 1840, most of the settlers had left for other parts of South Carolina or Tennessee because of economic reasons. However, some people returned to Ft Mill and continued to operate an agricultural business until 1865. During World War II, Ft Mill played an important role in helping support U.S troops stationed in Europe by providing food and munitions supplies and also housing soldiers and their families during their stay ashore at Normandy beaches during Operation Overlord (the invasion of Normandy). After hostilities ended in 1945, many residents decided not to return home since they were tired of living under wartime conditions and lacked many amenities such as schools or shopping centers available back then. However, due to increasing development around FtMill over time it has regained some populations with more than 2200 residents currently residing there according to2010 census data
