The United States Air Force has a long and proud history of deploying gift baskets as part of its holiday cheer. From the early days of theAAF when gift baskets were sent to troops in World War I, through the Vietnam War and into the present, these baskets have always been an important part of USAF culture. In 1917, America entered World War I and enacted a law that allowed members of the military to receive gifts from civilians. This was an important step in developing USAF culture because it demonstrated that American citizens were supportive of their military brethren. Additionally, this law created a need for Aeronautical Engineers (Aeronautical Engineers being those who designed and built aircraft) which fort Mill had in abundance. In 1919, Fort Mill became home to Americas first Officer Candidate School (OCS). OCS would be one of the most influential programs in Air Forces history. It provided opportunities for airmen to learn about commando tactics and techniques; development of air-to-air missiles; artillery tactics; infantry fighting techniques; strategic bombing doctrine; et cetera. These experiences would later form the foundation for USAF units such as The 1st Fighter Squadron (F4U), The 82d Bombardment Wing (B8I), The 388th Bombardment Wing (H2A), etc., all activated at Fort Mill during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. During World War II, gifts were not as common but nonetheless something that soldiers received on Christmas Day 1944 when General George C Marshall personally delivered a basket filled with items including cigarettes and chewing gum to Second Lieutenant Bruce Kappenheimer at Camp Kilmer near New York City while he was stationed at Fordham University’s campus there. Kappenheimer would become one of America’s most famous pilots during WWII and flew missions over Japan delivering supplies to his forces there under cover of darkness before returning home on his own machinegun plane! This event is considered by many as one of Air Force history’s most memorable moments!
The Air Force deployed a gift to the people of Iraq this Valentine's Day. A team of specialists from the Air Force gifted 2,000 pieces of chocolates to Iraqi children throughout February and March. The Chocolate Covered Hearts campaign was started in response to the starvation conditions in Iraq. On Dec. 15, 1941, the Fort Mill Air Force Base was activated with the intent of providing military support for the United States during World War II. The base would soon become one of the largest in South Carolina and serve as an important stop on bomber routes connecting North America with Europe. The gift history of the Fort Mill Air Force Base begins with Colonel John T. "JT" Herrington who served as Commanding Officer from 1942-1945. Under His leadership, Fort Mill grew to be a major airbase located approximately 12 miles south of Charleston, S.C., serving as home to more than 100 fighters and bombers including F-6F Panthers and B-24 Liberators. In 1946, Colonel Sherington became Commandant at Fort Mill after retiring from the Air Force. One year later, he named his son JT III commandant at Ft Mill AFB effective Feb 1st 1947 thru Oct 1st 1949 when he retired due to age 70 years old! Since then there have been several commandants before Lt Col USAF Dennis Rader (Jan 25th 1959 - Nov 14th 1961) who held various commands until his retirement on Sep 24th 1967 due to age 78 years old; Col USAF James Wiles (Feb 9th 1975 - Jan 5th 1977) who was inactivated on July 7th 1979 due to age 82 years old; Maj USAF Leroy Wigglesworth (March 3rd 1984 - Aug 30TH 1986) who assumed command on Sep 1st 1988 following Lt Col USAF Donnie Witherspoon's retirement; Maj USAF Eddie Yeoman Jr.(Sept 4TH 1990 - present). It is interesting to note that all thesecommandants held their positions for a total of almost six decades!
Fort Mill is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 1,764 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan Statistical Area. Fort Mill was founded in 1827 by Colonel John Stark and his family as a military post on Catawba River. In 1851, Fort Mill became the home of Confederate General William Tecumseh Sherman's headquarters during his march from Atlanta to Chattanooga. The community has been mentioned in books and movies such as "The Help" and "The Shawshank Redemption".
The United States Air Force Deployed Gift History began in the early 1960s when Maj.Gen. John F. Additionally, some air forces have decided against sending gifts because they do not believe that it brings any benefit to their unit or country. However, even though there may be some air forces that continue to send gifted items, it is most likely that this tradition will die out completely within the next few years because modern technology makes gifting easier and more convenient than ever before for both members of the military and civilians all over the world.

Fort Mill was a small fortification located in what is now Fort Mill, South Carolina. It was built in 1775 and served as a military post during the American Revolution. The fort was abandoned in 1815 and later destroyed by fire. The fortification is notable for its history and for being the location where the first white child to be born in South Carolina, John White, was born on July 4, 1775. The fortifications were also used during the 1800s as a training ground for Confederate soldiers.
Fort Mill was the first settlement in this area and the first U.S. fort on the site of present-day Fort Mill. The fort was built in 1795 by Colonel Jameson, a Loyalist military officer who fled to South Carolina after the American Revolution. It served as a base for Patriot forces during the Creek War of 1813 and as an arsenal during the American Revolutionary War. In 1798, General John Forbes built Fort Moultrie on nearby Tybee Island to serve as an artillery depot for defending against British attack from withinhauling supplies to their army at Camden County, Georgia. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson invaded South Carolina and took control of Fort Moultrie. He used it as his headquarters and conducted military campaigns throughout southern Georgia before leaving for home in December 1815. During his stay, he erected a new battery at Fort Moultrie which became known as Battery Park or Jackson’s Battery because it was manned by members of his staff during his visit. The fortifications around Fort Mill were abandoned in 1830 following Indian attacks that year and never restored; however, they remain one of its most distinguishing features today. The town of Fort Mill began development around the fortifications beginning in 1840; however, until 1865 it consisted only of small hamlets scattered along both banks of the Cooper River. In 1865, when Confederate troops retreated from North Carolina after Battle Of Pee Dee,[1] they destroyed most of what remained of Fort Mills City limits including much of downtown.[2] Today only a few artifacts from earlyFortMill history remains: two cannons still sit atopached brick walls near Old State Capitol Building (now partof Clemson University), while another cannon is preserved insideOldMills Arsenalnow partof ClemsonUniversity museum.]
