Florence, South Carolina is a small town located in the state of South Carolina. The population was 10,567 at the 2000 census. It is part of Greenville County. The zip code for Florence, SC is 29121. The city was founded in 1820 by James Weems and his family. When the United States acquired South Carolina from Spain in 1819, Weems became its first governor. In 1824, he founded what would become Florence as a market town on the east side of Ashley River. The town's early growth was due to its location on navigable river channels and its natural resources; these include timber and coal deposits that were exploited until the early 20th century. In 1861, Colonel John Cotesworth Pinckney chose Florence as the site for his new Confederate military station known as Fort Sumter; it would serve as a base from which Confederate forces operated during the American Civil War. After Charleston's surrender in 1865, Florence became an important railroad hub serving both Union and Confederate forces throughout Reconstruction until post-war economic changes halted most rail service in south central South Carolina. During World War II, much of southernSouth Carolina was occupied by Japanese forces; Florence played host to numerous POW camps until 1945 when they were evacuated to Japan proper under Operation BLUE JELLY (see also Battle of Fort Pillow). After more than fifty years of continuous growth and development within city limits only 5% of current residents lived here when Amtrak reached Florence through Interstate 85 in 1984; today almost all who call Stevens Point their home have done so since then via Amtrak or air travel including those commuting into central Illinois each day from west Chicago and other cities along I-85 corridor reaching Streator Junction about 50 miles east of downtown Ft Worth—an area with a population over 3 million people!

Florence, South Carolina is a city on the Ashley River in York County, South Carolina. The population was 9,814 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of York County and home to Florence University. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Florence were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1665 and developed a small town on the north bank of the Ashley River. They named their settlement "Nieuwpoort" after the capital of Holland at that time. The town grew rapidly and by 1710 had become a major center for trade on the Ashley River and its tributaries. In 1738, James Moore established a plantation near modern-day Florence with his wife Sarah commandeering land from an Indian chief they called "Pocotala". In 1741 they had two children: John (born February 2, 1741) and Susannah (born May 25, 1743). After James' death in 1745, Sarah continued to live on her plantation until her death in 1802. She bequeathed all her property including slaves to John Moore's daughter Abigail who then conveyed it to her son Reuben Chase in 1827. The town prospered under Abigail's guidance and by 1800 there were more than 100 white people living hereabouts; black people also lived nearby on smaller plantations owned by white families. By 1830 this number had dropped to about 30 while most residents worked their farms or services provided by local merchants or companies such as those run by Reuben Chase himself or his father Eliakim Chase Sr.. In 1834–35 some colonists banded together to form a militia against proslavery raiders led by Captain William Dillard which forced Dillard's surrender at Nacoochee Landing without any loss of life or treasure! At this point about sixty families lived hereabouts with over 1,000 head of cattle and 2000 slaves! When Andrew Johnson became president of America he selected Florence as one of five southern cities he proposed make up an Appalachian Regional Commission which would work to promote economic development within Appalachia through education programs and other initiatives designed at helping whites move away from slavery while preserving part – if not all – of African American culture/heritage therein! In 1865 Confederate General Pemberton arrived here seeking refuge during the Civil War after his army was routed southward along the lower Ashley River valley
