The Marines of Company K, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines deployed in support of Operation Southern Watch on December 12-15, 2009. The unit arrived in Florence, South Carolina on December 15 and spent the next two weeks training with their battalion-sized cousins from the 3rd Marine Division.
Once they had completed their basic training and gotten some rest, the Marines began their deployment by heading out to do some reconnaissance work in the area around Pee Dee Island. The following day, they boarded a convoy bound for Fort Bragg. They arrived there on New Year's Day 2010 and were immediately assigned to duty as part of Task Force Yankee Doodle.
Task Force Yankee Doodle was tasked with patrolling the waters off Cape Fear River in order to deter any potential pirates or smugglers coming up the coast. While performing this duty they came across a group of Somali pirates who were attempting to steal a tugboat full of humanitarian supplies destined for Somalia. After tracking down and shooting at these pirates until they surrendered, Task Force Yankee Doodle then moved onto other duties that day including providing security for visiting dignitaries at Fort Bragg during National Defense Week.
On January 8th 2010 Task Force Yankee Doodle discovered three small boats filled with Somali pirates trying to enter United States territorial waters off Cape Hatteras Island. After engaging these piracy vessels until they surrendered without injury or damage done to either vessel, Task Force Yankee Doodle moved onto another task; monitoring shipping traffic near Inlet #8 between Jacksonville Beach and Fort Myers Beach while conducting naval gunfire practice drills with American destroyers USS Constitution (CVN 76) and USS George Washington (CVN 73). This task was successfully completed before nightfall February 1st 2010 having yielded no results since previous attempts when all boats managed to get away safely without incident.
Everyday during February 10-12 2010 various ships from south Florida take part in Operation Northern WATCH which is conducted along US coastline between Jacksonville Beach and clearwater island just offshore from Cape Canaveral Air Station in order to intercept any pirate cells making landings attempt Container shipments intercepted include beer being stashed aboard two containers bound for Somalia while cigarettes were also found inside one container destined for Mogadishu. On Saturday February 15th2010 an additional team consisting of Navy SEALs attacked a smuggling cell ashore on Isla Mujeres east coast after observing them loading weapons onto a fishing boat.
