The townsite was laid out by James Ennis in 1820 and named for his father-in-law, Lorenzo Florence. The present town of Florence was chartered on February 14, 1872, by a group of local merchants and farmers who were looking to avoid the growth of Columbia City to the north. In 1900, Florence had a population of 17 and became an important center for cotton sales around the state. However, with the development of oil exploration and production in nearby Sumter County during the early 21st century, economic activity has dwindled in Florence as well. The history of Florence can be traced back to 1820 when James Ennis laid out a small community called "New Spain" near where he lived with his wife Anna Maria (née Hardcastle).
