Florence was founded by African Americans in 1887 and named for Florence of Italy. It is the most populous black community in the state of South Carolina. The first white settler in what is now Florence was John Hays who arrived in 1768 with his family from Virginia. By 1800, there were over 100 white residents living in what is now Florence. In 1887, African American slaves brought their families to Florence from nearby Greenville to escape persecution back home. At that time, slavery was still legal in South Carolina and many blacks worked as slaves on plantations south of the line. In 1861 during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down part of downtown Florence while attacking Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant; this destroyed much of downtown and left many African Americans homeless and penniless. The Reconstruction Era saw new opportunities for African Americans following the end of slavery which allowed them access to education and housing opportunities not available to previous generations of blacks. In 1903, brick-and-mortar businesses began opening up throughout town after two years of planning by a group led by Reverend Wades Hampton III along with municipal leaders Arno Mann and Jacobus Fenton Weems Jr..
