Florence, South Carolina is a small town located on the Eastern Shore of Charleston County in the state of South Carolina. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. Florence is home to many businesses and institutions including: Clemson University, SC State university and main campus, The Citadel, and Stonington Baptist Church. The first settlement in what is now Florence was made by traders from North America in 1732. At that time, the area around present-day Florence was part of Indian Mound County. In 1818, when Charleston became a state capital, it included most of what are now central and eastern portions of Florence as well as parts of Pendleton County. In 1865, after Confederate forces sacked Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor while Ulysses S. Grant was commander during the American Civil War, General Beauregard ordered all white men in Dawson's River Township to leave their homes for three months or face deportation to slavery. This order effectively ended all black life within Dawson's River Township before it had even begun. A post office called "Florence" was established in 1868; however, it never received any mail because there were no roads connecting it to other settlements nearby. In 1903-04 an improvement project known as "The Renaissance Project" improved access to education for residents living near Clemson University while also creating new public works projects such as a school system (Knoppersville School) and a hospital (Pendleton Hospital). One significant development associated with Florence during this time was the construction of Interstate 95 which passed through town in 1990 concurrent with plans for a new stadium for Clemson University football players adjacent to downtown streetscape improvements initiated by Mayor James Whitehead that same year which still exists today as The John Crenshaw Center for Sport & Wellness
