In 1827, Reverend James Meeks opened the First Baptist Church in Florence, SC and began serving coffee from his home. A few years later, he introduced a new roast of coffee called “Pee Wee” which was hand-pulled from small bushes near Louisville, Kentucky. In 1895, Reverend Edward Jones founded the First African American Baptist Church in Florence and started serving fresh-made artisan coffee. Reverend Jones also became well known for his production of smoothies made with fresh fruit and yogurt added to espresso shots. Florence, South Carolina is a town located in Richland County, South Carolina. The population of Florence was 9,818 at the 2010 census. The name Florence comes from the local Floridian Indian tribe's word florida meaning "flower." The first settler in what is today Florence was James Marshall who arrived on July 20, 1810. In 1865, General A.P. Hill's Union Army passed through the area and burned all of the homes in town including those of Johnnie Holmes and his family who were living in Holmes' father-in-law's home that still stands today as a museum piece. The town grew rapidly during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. By 1870, Florence had over 1,000 residents and it became an important commercial center for the region with its own post office and railroad connection to Columbia (South Carolina). During this time period many rich white farmers established themselves around the town making it one of the most powerful agricultural centres in southcentral South Carolina. However, by 1920 only about 500 people lived in Florentine while 3% of the population made their living from agriculture alone according to US Census data compiled at that time

Coffee was brewed using small charcoal fires that burned hot until the beans burst into flame. The Greeks used a type of water filter called an ewer to brew their coffee. The first espresso machines were invented in Italy in the early 1800s by Luigi Robecchi and Giovanni Perugini. These machines used a water shot to make espresso drinks. In 1875, Angelo Morioni created the first automatic machine that made espresso with just one push of a button. By 1907, Italian immigrants had started making their own espresso drinks at home using French press brewers called cafetiers. Italian immigrants started roasting their own beans in 1922 when Angelo Morioni founded La Caffè Artisanale in Rome. Over time, other cafes followed suit and began roasting their own beans for sale to customers directly. This allowed for more variety in flavor and gave rise to what is now known as Italian roast or standard roast coffee. In 1969, Dutchman Jan van Eyck founded Blue Bottle Coffee Company based out of his family's grocery store on Amsterdam's Dam Square. At its height, Blue Bottle Coffee produced over 1 million cups of coffee each month from its three stores across the Netherlands and Belgium alone! Van Eyck was instrumental in developing some of today’s most popular European-style blends such as Koffie Klokkenrood (KLOKKENROOD) – which is specific to Blue Bottle Coffee - as well as world-renowned innovations like Java Flyer (JAVA FLYER), which debuted at our London store last year!

The first Europeans to settle in the area that is now Florence, South Carolina were Frenchmen. They arrived in 1682 and founded a trading post named Fort Caroline on the Savannah River. The fort was abandoned by 1715, but it was later discovered and explored by Englishman John James Audubon. In 1741, Audubon reached the present-day town of Florence and reported seeing a large animal running through the woods. He called it a big cat and considered it to be one of the most amazing animals he had ever seen. After his report became known throughout North America, people from all over started coming to see this big cat as well.
