Easley is a small town in South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. Easley is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. The first European to visit Easley was Captain James Cook in 1772, who named it "Auckland" after his king's island in New Zealand. A post office called Easley was established in 1824, and remained open until 1895. Easley began as a cotton plantation town on the Savannah River near present-day Columbia. The plantations were destroyed by disease and lynching during Reconstruction; only a few remain today. In 1865, white Southerners voted to secede from the Union; Easley became an all-white community under the leadership of seventy-six year old Samuel Henson Sr., who had earlier been one of secessionist promoters in neighboring Greenville County. The Cedar Hill School District was organized through consolidation of three smaller districts on November 1, 1909 – including Easley – with plans for high school education for African Americans serving as assistant teachers and custodians while whites attended segregated public schools. On December 5, 1909 education superintendent John Ginter announced that all black students would attend Cedar Hill High School instead of integrated public schools starting on January 1, 1910; this decision sparked protests from white parents who felt they should be able to choose their children's educational environment without government interference. African American students made up just 8% of enrollment at Cedar Hill throughout its first two decades; however, some progress was made eventually reaching 15%.
