Easley is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 10,725 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Anderson-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Easley community began as a small post office on December 7, 1884, within the present town boundaries. It was named for John A. Easley (1824–1892), who had been an early settler in Spartanburg County and later served as sheriff and justice of the peace. The first postmaster was J. W. McKnight. In 1912, when Spartanburg County became Union County, Easley became part of Uniontown Township; however, it reverted to its original name in 1924 when it united with neighboring blockhouse village of Hartsville to form newUniontown Township Park District #2 which still exists today Easley also has its own school system: Easley Elementary School (grades PreK-8) and Hartsville Middle School (grades 9-12). Easley is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,393 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Easley were two men from Wales named John and Thomas Weare in 1795. They built a cabin on an old plantation near present-day Easley and named it Fort Weare after their home country. A post office was established at Easley in 1802, and the town grew rapidly with its many farmers growing corn, cattle, and hay. By 1819 there were twenty-four homes in Easley proper and ninety-six residents living on 118 farms around the town limits. A Presbyterian church was built in 1824 and became known as First Presbyterian Church of South Carolina (FPCSC). In 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell moved his headquarters to Fayetteville during the American Civil War but he never set foot in South Carolina until 1865 when he arrived at Charleston Harbor to march his army into Yankee territory. On April 12th 1865 Confederate General James Longstreet ordered all troops within five miles of Columbia to assemble for battle against Union forces under Ulysses S Grant near Appomattox Court House south of nearby Greenville; accordingly, most residents of Easley evacuated their homes that day before combat began between Union forces commanded by General William Tecumseh Sherman and Confederate Lieutenant Colonel Richard Maney’s brigade; however, some civilians who remained behind fought courageously until surrendering or being evacuated by Union forces later that evening (see Battle of Appomattox Court House). After the war ended most African Americans fled to neighboring white states such as Georgia or Arkansas while some returned home but most left again within months because black Reconstruction Period laws required them to leave for good any property they had owned prior to January 1st 1870 when slavery ended inSouth Carolina gubernatorial order following a state constitutional amendment banning slavery throughout much of southern America; see also: The Resettlement Act of 1865 which granted citizenship rights to Freedmen/Free Negroes over sixty years old upon passage & ratification by Congress) Easley experienced heavy rural black migration beginning in the early 1920s due chiefly to cotton farming opportunities created by World War II agricultural production shortages caused by then newly developed synthetic materials used for rubber & other products resulting from increased demand for labor overseas during World War II carpet bombing raids on North Africa & Europe including V-1 flying missiles dropped from RAF Bomber Command's "Dover" aircraft over German cities killing up to million people including 400% mortality rate among women & children); incidentally these textile mills closed down immediately after 1945 without giving Blacks inside opportunity nor job training nor economic development opportunities which would have led more blacks back into village life participation thereby stimulating local economy revival (& restoration/maintenance/creation new business districts)
