Easley is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Easley was James A. Haley in 1837. He and his family founded a log cabin on the site that still stands today. Haley's cabin was built on land that later became part of Easley Township. In 1841, John Witherspoon settled in what is now Easley with his wife and two children. Witherspoon purchased three hundred acres (12 km²) of land from Hugh Johnston for $500 cash and moved his families to what is now known as Easley Township in 1846. In 1850, Elijah Coker arrived from Tennessee with his family and platted what are now parts of Easley Township, Springdale Township, Indianola Township and White Springs Township on 300 acres (121 ha) he had just purchased from Hugh Johnston for $1,000 cash. Coker named the town after him – Elijah Coker Town – but it changed hands several times until it was finally purchased by Jno Pugh from Major General Robert Anderson in 1865 for $5 per acre ($2/ha). Pugh renamed it "Easley" after himself on February 12th 1865 when he took possession of the town from Anderson. In 1870, Lewis Sikes came to live in Easley and started a small grocery store at 515 Elm Street which still stands today as Sikes'supermarket business remains one of the largest employers withincircle around town today! Lewis Sikes likely opened up shop soon after William Fergusson built an irrigation canal through much of Spartanburg County providing water access to farming areas northwest of town- this would set off many more businesses growth throughout downtownEasley during those early years!
