The town was originally called "Lenoir" after Colonel James Lenoir, but the name was changed to honor Dr. John Easley's father. In 1840, the town had a population of only 50 people and was abandoned due to malaria. However, in 1850, the town again experienced growth due to the opening of a steamboat dock and its ensuing trade with neighboring Savannah. In 1860, during the American Civil War, General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Easley and burned most of the buildings in the town. Today much of what remains of Easley is a historical marker erected by local officials as part of their commemoration efforts for the war effort.
