The first Europeans to arrive in this area were French colonists, who founded a mission in 1721. In 1819, when South Carolina became a state, Conway was one of the first towns to be established. It rapidly grew in size and importance due to its location on the Savannah River and its role as a transportation hub. In 1929, Conway was incorporated as a city. It experienced rapid growth during World War II thanks to its proximity to Fort McAllister and its production of munitions. After the war, Conway continued to grow as a center for commerce and education. Its nickname “The City That Can’t Be Killed” is based on this fact. Conway, South Carolina is a small town in the state of South Carolina located on the Eastern border of the state. The population was 2,662 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Conway was Isaac Harmon in 1788. At that time, Conway consisted of a few scattered farms and a few log homes. In 1827, settlers from Kershaw County arrived and founded what would become known as "The Harmon Settlement" on land donated by Isaac Harmon's father-in-law, John C. Whitehead. In 1830, white supremacists set fire to several slave cabins near present day Conway while black slaves were inside; this event is known as The Burning of Conway. In 1851, General Nathan Bedford Forrest chose Conway as his site for a cotton plantation because it had good soil and low prices for cotton elsewhere in South Carolina. The plantation became one of Forrest's most successful businesses and he later served as its president and owner until his death in 1901. After Forrest's death, control over the plantation passed through three families before being acquired by J P Morgan & Company who leased it to Lumberman Samuel Hance in 1912 (the first African American to own property within Spartanburg County). At that time Conway became an important center for lumber production due to its location on I-20 between Greenville and Charleston which made it easy to ship lumber eastward across the Carolinas using railroads then available. 1 According to historian Don Fenton: "It was not until after World War II that questions began to be raised about whether or not [Conway] constituted ghettos or segregated rural areas." After World War II white flight into urban areas increased competition for jobs among black Americans living outside urban centers - including residents living in Bowmanstown (now part of Conway) – leading some people to ask if these groups were beingBlacked out of history altogether." With limited funding shortfalls during both world wars local officials worked together with federal organizations like Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC)to develop plans for economic development opposite streetcar lines running through Bowmanstown/conway giving locals access job opportunities outside their communities
Conway was founded in 1775 by John Conway and his wife, Susannah. The townstand was located on the present-day corner of Mulberry and Cowpens Streets. In 1868, the towncouncil voted to change its name to Conway after General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House.
