The Columbia Naval Shipyard was founded in 1847 and the first Naval ship, USS Constitution, was launched on December 5, 1849. The shipyard played an important role in naval history as it built a number of warships for the Union Navy and Confederate Navy. In 1861, the shipyards were destroyed by Confederate forces during the Civil War. After the war, the navy recommissioned many of the ships that had been lost in battle. The Columbia Naval Shipyard played a significant role in this process and continue to do so to this day. In 1961, South Carolina became a state and theColumbia Naval Shipyard became part of South Carolina State University’s Department of Defense Studies and Research Center (DSRC). This partnership has helped keep Columbia Naval Shipyards open and active while also providing opportunities for students to learn about naval history.
