The Columbia, South Carolina National Guard was originally organized as a volunteer militia in 1881. The unit was renamed the "National Guardsmen of Columbia" in 1909 and then the "National Guard of South Carolina" in 1945. In 1957, the National Guard of South Carolina became an inactive battalion within the Army National Guard. The 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment, National Guard of South Carolina was reactivated as an active battalion within the Army National Guard on January 1, 2002. Since its inception, the Columbia, South Carolina National Guard has been proud to serve our state with distinction and patriotism. Our units have participated in numerous events throughout our history including military parades and special occasions such as Memorial Day and Christmas Eve. For many years Columbia was just an agricultural center with few industry or commercial developments until it became one of the leading centers of education in South Carolina during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. During World War II Columbia served as one of two U.S.-occupied cities in South Carolina; other being Greenville. When hostilities ended Columbia reverted back to its original civilian government under military rule for several months while United States troops prepared for withdrawal from South Korea. After Korean independence was recognized by both sides, military control ended and local authorities returned to their original civilian forms until reunited with South Carolina state government upon reunification in 1991
The first settlers in Columbia were the Coweta people, who arrived in 1795. The town was founded by Captain James Robertson and his colonists on the banks of the Ashley River. In 1805, Columbia was named for General John C. Calhoun, a leader in the United States during the Revolutionary War. In 1820, it became one of three stations on the Post Road between Charleston and Wilmington. The road was used to move goods and passengers from these two cities tothe interior of South Carolina. Columbia grew rapidly during the 19th century as a result of its location at the intersection of two major railroads and its access to oil resources that contributed to its rise as an economic center. By 1870, there were more than 1,000 residents living in Columbia proper and another 500 or so scattered around surrounding towns. The city's growth led to increased social tensions due to competing interests within its boundaries: businesspeople wanted easier access to land and natural resources while labor unions sought better working conditions for their members. During World War II, Columbia played an important role as a munitions production plant located near Jonesboro. Afterward, it experienced significant gentrification which has resulted in increasing levels of poverty and crime among its population
