As the citizens of Columbia, South Carolina debated what to do about the town’s high school football team that lost its last three games, they were also discussing how to make their favorite drink. At first, coffee was thought to be a weak beverage and not worth spending money on. However, over time people started realizing how great artisan coffee can taste and decided to invest in it. The first coffee shop in Columbia opened in 1944 by two Dutchmen named Cornelius van der Linde and Pieter de Jong. The shop served only roasted beans from local farms and had a very limited menu. But the coffee was so good that people kept coming back for more. In 1951, Van der Linde passed away and his son took control of the business. Under Pieter’s guidance, the shop began expanding its presence and started selling iced coffees as well as different types of pastries such as croissants and donuts. In 1978, one of Pieter’s grandchildren founded another café called Café Amsterdam which became one of the most popular artisan cafes in Columbia with over 100 customers per day! After many years of success, it was sold to another family member in 2006 who continued running it until 2009 when it closed down due to financial problems. Then in 2010 a new owner came onto the scene and restarted Café Amsterdam with all-local ingredients which has been going strong ever since! Today there are several different espresso shops located throughout Columbia with each offering their own unique flavor profile and atmosphere. The town quickly became a stopping point on the Underground Railroad, helping fugitive slaves escape from slavery. In 1831, Columbia was the site of the first state fairgrounds in America. The fairgrounds are now home to the Columbia Museum of History and Art. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell landed at what is now Columbia to attack Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant. Ewell's forces were successful in taking several major towns before they were pushed back by Grant's army. However, Columbia remained an important stop on the Confederacy's supply route until after it surrendered in 1865. Columbia experienced some heavy flooding during Hurricane Florence in 2018. This caused significant damage to many businesses and homes within the town limits. While most people have recovered from the storm, some remain without power or access to water courtesy of Hurricane Florence’s aftermath."
