Since the Charleston Marines first served in World War II, their service has been celebrated through Gift History Month. The tradition of giving back to veterans began with the Marine Corps Recruiting Command’s “Gift of Honor” program. This year, more than 1,500 military and civilian recipients brought gifts to Marines stationed at various units in Charleston during Memorial Day weekend. The USS Yorktown Museum in downtown Charleston hosted a special event on Saturday that offered gift baskets filled with treats from local businesses and organizations. The event was also the launch of a new donation drive called Operation Good Neighborhship which encourages civilians and military members to bring donations to local nonprofit organizations throughout Memorial Day Weekend. Though there are many different ways marines can show their support for those serving in Afghanistan or Iraq, Gifts of Honor have always been an important part of the Marine Corps culture. By honoring our troops with thoughtful gifts, we demonstrate our appreciation for them both on and off duty.
The Marine Corps has been deploying gift baskets to troops in Afghanistan since the early 1990s. The purpose of these baskets is not simply to provide a smile, but also to provide a sense of community and support. In recent years, the Corps has made an additional effort to send gifts that are unique and memorable. One of the most popular items sent in Marines’ gift baskets is cigarettes. Cigarettes have long been associated with masculinity and wariness, but through the years the Corps has found that packaging cigarettes as gifts can be successful in building relationships with troops and supporting their morale. This year, for example, Marines received free packs of cigarettes when they completed their Basic Combat Training course at Camp Pendleton. Additionally, each unit was given a bag of cigarettes as part of their Christmas present last year. The Corps also distributes cigars as gifts. cigar smokers often find themselves in difficult situations where they don’t have access to tobacco products or they need a smoke while on duty or during operations. As a result, cigars are often seen as an effective way to show appreciation and support for service members who may be facing difficult challenges outdoors. In 2006, for example, Marines were given free cigars when they completed their amphibious assault training exercise at Anaconda Island in Lake Erie National Park. This was followed by this year’s Operation Neptune Spear—a humanitarian intervention campaign against Taliban forces in Afghanistan—in which Marines were able to purchase cigars from local vendors at military checkpoints throughout the country. While there are many different types of gifts that Marines receive from deployment Gift Baskets (and from individual units), it is important that these items reflect both the personal tastes and needs of each soldier upon return home. By doing so, we can create lasting connections between servicemen and women across all branches of our military – something that is sorely needed right now on numerous levels across America

Charleston is a city in the state of South Carolina, located on the Ashley River. The population was 871,824 as of the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous cities in The Carolinas and one of the fastest-growing cities in America. Charleston has been nicknamed "The Best Place to Be Alive" and "The City on Time". The first major settlement in what is now Charleston was founded by English colonists in 1629 as a small trading post on an island in the Ashley River. The colony grew steadily over the next hundred years, becoming an important seaport and center for African American trade and slave trade. In 1801, slavery was abolished throughout The United States, marking an historic moment for Charleston. With its abolition came increased political power for African Americans and a rise of social progressivism within white society. Charlestown remained an important cultural and commercial center during Reconstruction until it experienced rapid growth following World War II when industry recommenced its expansion there. In 1990, Hurricane Hugo caused extensive damage to downtown Charleston and many businesses were destroyed or damaged beyond repair. However, this did not stop downtown from experiencing resumed growth after two decades of consolidation among several new business districts including Broadwalk Square, Downtown Market, Decatur Street Station and West End neighborhood which are still home to some of today's biggest businesses such as Amazon Prime Warehouse (1 mile away), FedEx Office (2 miles away) and Wells Fargo Bank (4 miles away). Despite being hit hard by Hurricane Hugo - with significant loss of life - downtown quickly recovered with several new restaurants opening up including Five Guys Burgers & Fries (just across Broadwalk Square from where Hugo devastated business), New Beginnings Bakery & Cafe (now known as Just about Everything), ABCDs Pizza Kitchen & Brewery (Noah's Ark Brewing Company) and Joe's Pub + Grille (formerly called Joe's Cafe). The Marine Corps has a long and proud history of deployment gift giving. The tradition began with the early Marines, who were often sent on combat patrols in small boats. As the Marines increased their number, they developed a set of traditions and protocols for sending gifts to their friends and family back home. The generosity shown by those within the Marine Corps was remarkable given that many people were deployed with no knowledge about what was happening outside their apartments or homes!

Charleston, located on the Eastern coast of South Carolina, is one of the most well known and popular tourist destinations in the United States. The city was founded by English colonists in 1729 as a small town called Charleston Plantation. It quickly became an important naval and military center due to its location on the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper rivers, which made it easy for British warships to move through the area. In 1809, Charleston became an incorporated municipality and began developing into a major river port. The city's success as a commercial center led to its nickname "The Garden City." During World War II, Charleston played a critical role in the war effort by providing engines, munitions, food supplies, and other essential services to Allied forces. After the war ended, the city experienced rapid growth as various industries become established within its boundaries. By 1990, Charleston had reached its current size with over 100 residential districts and over 60 businesses employing over 50 thousand people. One of the most significant aspects of Charleston's history is its relationship with black Americans. From its early days as a slaveholding colony until 1865 when African Americans were granted their own right to vote in South Carolina statehood, Confederate General Robert Easley styled Charleston "The Fairest City on Earth" because black residents constituted only 10% of all residents. However, after Reconstruction began in 1865 following white supremacist violence against African Americans throughout western South Carolina (and parts of Georgia), African American property owners increased theirOwn control over cities like Savannah and Mobile during this time period; although these changes did not result in complete integration into white society nor equality for all citizens within this community – primarily because wealthy white men continued to own large percentages of both urban land and rural areas across much southern America – black households remained segregated throughout much of this era despite economic opportunities available to them outside of race-based discrimination). Despite some progress made since then – such as passage of Section 8 housing assistance programs that have helped integrate many low-income families into public housing – poverty continues to exist among inner-city blacks especially; contributing significantly towards ratesOf homicide (the world’s second highest) among young adults ages 15-24 years old[1] Gay rights have also come a long way since then: while laws criminalizing homosexual behavior remain extant,[2] same sex marriage has been legalized statewide in South Carolina since December 14th 2014[3], making it one step closer towards full equality under US law however further litigation remains necessary before fully achieving that goal across all states currently governed by Republican Party governors
On July 15, 1776, Charleston was burned by the British military during the Battle of Bunker Hill. The city's defenders were able to muster enough troops to rebuild and regained their independence in 1814.
