Settlers built plantations along the river until 13% of all slaves were located in Charleston during slavery's peak (1830). This event led to what is now known as The American Civil War; Charleston played a significant role in this conflict due to its strategic location at the mouth of Elizabeth River – just upstream from Union forces commanded by General Ulysses S. Grant – and its slave trade connections through adjacent states such as Georgia and North Carolina. Looking back on the history of coffee, it can be difficult to determine which cafes and roasters were the first to bring this unique beverage to market. However, there are some clear pioneers in the coffee world who have had a significant impact on how coffee is consumed today. First and foremost, there is undoubtedly Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (CBE) who began distributing ground beans and roasted tea directly to consumers in 1907. From there, they quickly became known for their high-quality coffee products. Additionally, Mr. Peet’s Café located in uptown Manhattan was an early pioneer in pod-based brewing with their first roast being released in 1945. This establishment is also responsible for introducing many of today’s popular brands including Starbucks®, Dunkin’ Donuts®, etcetera. While it would be unfair to name any one individual as the “father of espresso” or “father of modern coffee drinking,” these individuals have certainly paved the way for what we experience today when enjoying our morning cup of joe at home or out on the town. Charleston is a city in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina, United States. The population was 663,901 at the 2010 census. Charleston is the third most populous city in South Carolina after Myrtle Beach and Columbia. In July 1824, it became the capital of Confederate America as part of a deal between President James K. Polk and General Robert E. Lee that ended the American Civil War. The city was re-established as an open-air market town with white cotton plantations until about 1870 when those were replaced by cotton mills which continue to be a large part of the economy today. The first inhabitants of what is now Charleston were Cherokee Indians who arrived from Georgia in 1775 during King George III's War for independence from Great Britain. They founded Fort Moultrie on Hillsborough Bay on 1 January 1776, with assistance from Colonel John Steedman and his men under Lt.-Colonel Christopher Gist, Jr.. After British forces destroyed Fort Moultrie on 3 February 1776, they abandoned their efforts to retake it and withdrew southward across Hillsborough Bay to Westville Landing on 14 February 1776 where they erected a newFort Moultrie which they named for Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Gist, Jr.. On 15 May 1780 British forces burned down Fort Moultrie again while its defenders ( chiefly Creek Indian warriors) fought back unsuccessfully against three days of bombardment; this event became known as "The Battle Of Wétoma". In December 1800 Lower Cape Fear River bandit chief Thomas Atwater built an artificial harbor on modern day Morris Island off Charleston Harbor in order to ship goods and passengers upriver towards Wilmington but his enterprise failed due to bad weather and Panama Canal construction delays. In 1803 Atwater moved his operations ashore onto what became known as Hechsler's Island following purchases from Danish shipping magnate Johann Henrik Hechsler who had long been interested in developing claims along the low coast of South Carolina. By 1814 he had acquired 8 square miles (20 km2) within present-day downtown Charleston including parts of both Johns Hopkins University campus (now known as Brown University) and then Broad Street shopping district before selling all rights interests to English agent Jno Smeaton in 1821 for $1 million dollars On 27 March 1692 English colonists James Johnsonston and John Smith met at Prospect Point near modern day Mount Pleasant Boulevard to negotiate terms regarding concessions offered by Spanish immigrant Juan Ponce de León along the lower Cape Fear River valley; these negotiations led eventually to England ceding possession over East Northumberland County (including present day Savannah) west of Augusta riverina Stripes to Spain via a treaty dated 5 August 1692 also called "The Treaty Of Plantation" which transferred land comprising much of southeastern South Carolina east of Augusta riverina Stripes back into English hands along with titles thereto including Mount Pleasant Boulevard overlooking Prospect Point among other lands including: Upon conclusion thereof Captain John Smith went ashore upon His Majesty's Ship Supply being advanced therewith £4000 sterling more than he received originally pledged thereby giving evidence that honest intent hath been manifested by this Government towards purchasers thereof thro'out this Province’ It should be noted that no formal agreement or document was ever signed between England & Spain resultant from this transaction neither did any boundaries exist according to which easternmost portions still remain within our Province today
