Cayce is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 5,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Cayce area was first settled by the Cherokee in 1763 and then by Huguenots in 1693. The town was platted in 1834 and named for John Caney, an early settler. A post office called Cayce was established in 1836, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1959, Cayce became one of thirteen townships included within the new Greenville- Spartanburg metropolitan area. In 2006, the town annexed neighboring unincorporated communities of New Market and Wellston to its territory; these communities had a combined population of 2,890 as of 2000. Cayce is a town in Lowndes County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous town in Lowndes County and the second most populous town in South Carolina after Columbia. The Cayce Plantation was founded by Johnathan Cayce in 1751. The Cayces were one of the first white families to settle in what is now Lowndes County. The plantation was later sold to Jabez Lawson and his wife Rebecca Bourne who named it "Bourne Place". In 1827, Joseph Bourne donated land to build a church on the site of today's First Baptist Church. In 1886, Thomas Peebles bought the plantation from Jabez Lawson and renamed it "Peebles Place". He developed it into a major cottonseed production center.. After World War II, many small businesses moved out of Cayce because of high taxes and competition from larger towns around Lowndes County. However, some businesses continued to operate until the late 1980s when they closed down due to economic decline throughout South Carolina. Today, there are few remains of old buildings from when Cayce was a thriving cottonseed producer with more than 2,000 residents back in 1886-2000 AGO There are only a few remaining plantations that still produce cottonseed today such as "Bourke Place", which is home to one of only two remaining African American families who operated their own plantations prior to 1960 AGO; and "Leesburg" which continues operations as an agricultural research complex providing sustainable food for local communities across Lowndes County
