Cayce is a town in southwestern South Carolina, United States. It was founded in 1834 by John D. Rockefeller and his father, Standard Oil tycoon William T. Vanderbilt Jr., as a small agricultural village on the banks of the Ashley River. Cayce quickly became an important manufacturing center for cotton and other crops, thanks to its location between two major slave-holding areas of the state. The town's growth accelerated during the early days of the American Civil War, when both Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Union General Ulysses S. Grant visited nearby plantations to purchase slaves for their armies. By 1865, Cayce had become one of the largest slave-holding towns in America, with over 1,500 enslaved families living there as slaves or owners. In 1878, Cayce became part of Georgetown County when it was created from parts of Spartanburg County and York County. In 1902, Georgetown County merged with Chowan County to form Anson County; however, Cayce continued to remain a part of Anson until it was abolished by Act No. 158 of 1922 (the "Anson Act"), which local officials stated did not reflect present day demographics or needs within the town itself; Cayce residents continue to be registered with Anson county government today but use their own name rather than "Cayce". Today, Baylis Funeral Home operates out of Cayce Cemetery since 1925 and provides services such as burial services for residents of Anson and Georgetown counties as well as surrounding areas including Sumter and Aiken Counties
