Cayce is a town in York County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,922 at the 2010 census. Cayce is part of the Myrtle Beach–Stellenwood–Rock Hill Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1851 by Scotsmen who had come to America on the "General David Dixon" ship. It became a center for cotton farming and timber production during the 19th century. During World War II, Cayce played an important role as a military airfield and as headquarters for the 9th Infantry Division during its campaign against Nazi Germany. After the war, it experienced rapid growth as an industrial center and bedroom community for nearby Myrtle Beach. In recent years, however, many residents have moved away from Cayce to pursue more active lifestyles or because of local economic problems such as low job opportunities and high housing costs. One of Cayce's most famous sons is singer Ronnie Hawkins; he attended supplement school in town before going on to win three Grammys (the first ever awarded to a hometown boy). Cayce was founded in 1846 by Admiral David Dixon and his wife, Eliza. The town grew up around the Navy Yard on the banks of the Ashley River. Today, Cayce is a small but vibrant community with a rich history. The town was originally called "Queenstown" after Queen Victoria's home country of Britain. Admiral Dixon named it for himself and his wife, who he affectionately called "Queenie." When the first post office opened in1846, Cayce residents voted to change the name to honor General William Sherman. According to one story, when Admiral Dixon learned about Sherman's march through Georgia he exclaimed, "Oh my! I've got him right here!" The navy yard closed in 1907 and most of Cayce went out of business. However, a few businesses continued to operate until World War II when they were destroyed by fire. Afterward, many people left Cayce for better opportunities elsewhere. However, some people kept living in Cayce and started a few new businesses such as car wash/laundry services and pet Salon/Fur shop. In recent years there have been plans to redevelop the old navy yard into housing units and retail space; however those plans have yet to be realized. The history of Cayce is filled with amazing events that have shaped our town today- from its early days as an agricultural outpost on Ashley River to its current role as an thriving community located within walking distance of both Charleston and Savannah airports
