Cayce, South Carolina is a small town located in the state of South Carolina. The population was 1,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of Greenville County. Cayce is one of the oldest communities in Spartanburg County and has been around since 1823 when it was called "Tulane". The first post office in Cayce was established on December 15, 1825. The original name for Cayce was "Higginson's Plantation." In 1864, John C. Higginson donated land to establish a town here. He named it after his brother-in-law, Augustus Ivey Higginson (1802-1868). By 1870, the town had a school and two stores. Its population numbered 624 people by 1880. The first white settler in Cayce arrived in 1823 by ship from Savannah, Georgia with twentyfive slaves under their control. They built a cabin on what became known as "Higgs' Hill." A post office was established there on December 15th of that year with the name "Tulane." In 1830, Robert Swayne moved to this area from Cherokee Fort and began planting corn and cotton on his farm which he named Swayne's Prairie after himself and his wife Sarah (née Prentiss). In 1833 he also founded Wofford College here as an agricultural college teaching methods developed by American farmers at that time such as crop rotation and use of artificial light for night classes while allowing students free access to forests for hunting purposes; these were some of Wofford's earliest achievements! After several years Swayne sold all his interests in those enterprises to Enoch Pratt who renamed the college after him - Enoch Pratt Agricultural College! Today there are still many descendants of Robert Swayne living hereabouts! In 1840 James Yancey came across this area from Charleston looking for land to settle down on but found only Cache Creek flowing through it so he decided instead to build a stockade along Cache Creek against Indians who were raiding his property daily trying to steal horses or other livestock! Mr Yancey named his new settlement "Cayce"after General James Ewell Ayres commanding United States forces during the Battle of Cowpens which ended successfully July 4th 1781 near present day Uniontown SC fame because General Ayres faced off against Lieutenant Colonel Swann’s British Infantry commanded by Major Thomas Moultrie which resulted in victory over British Regular Army with Lt Col Swann taking 3 Medals including Anacreon ( Victoria) Cross & George Washington Medal !! This event helped spur American Independence movement!! Today much remains unchanged about early history & culture hereabouts including beautiful oldGeezer Mansion now used as Museum

Cayce is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 4,010 at the 2000 census. It is the borough seat of Cayce Township and the only municipality in the county. The town was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1853 as a small farming community on the banks of the Little Pee Dee River southeast of Spartanburg. In 1875, Cayce became a village when it joined Spartanburg County. A post office and store were established there in 1876, but closed operations in 1902. Cayce again became a village after it joined Spartanburg County again on January 1, 1907. The first school started instruction there on December 15th that year. The last school opened for students in 1915 and was closed due to low enrollment until 1976 when it reopened as part of Spartanburg County's new public schools system. In 1912, an oil well was discovered near Cayce and production began soon thereafter; this led to increased development around Cayce with several businesses being built such as stores, hotels and restaurants along with residences for workers at nearby refineries or offshore rigs. By 1970, almost all buildings had been destroyed by fire or other damage from oil production though some survive today including one lighthouse which overlooks Clearwater Bayou outside of town limits although its keeper's house has been damaged multiple times over the years by flooding from bayous inside and outside town limits The current incarnation of Cayce began developing shortly after Hurricane Hugo made landfall south of New Orleans on September 28th 1998; parts within town limits were leveled while others were severely damaged during what turned out to be one of worst natural disasters in Louisiana history with much material remaining unincorporated within incorporated areas until relatively recently due largely to efforts by local officials concerned about potential future destruction brought about primarily by climate change Governor Roy Cooper announced plans for $25 million towards reconstruction/development within town boundaries following Hurricane Hugo aftermath Despite strong objections from some residents whose homes had been destroyed or suffered significant damage many people quickly came together to help rebuild their communities providing goods such as lumber (mostly cedar) salvaged from other locations around southern Louisiana plus volunteers who helped erect towers to provide access into most affected areas without having any fear of retribution should things go wrong Brickades Homes - originally designed as emergency housing following Katrina - began selling pre-made houses starting October 22nd 2006 just outside Mayor McCoy's office located adjacent to flooded intersection just east of Main Street next door to incinerator still standing despite being completely submerged when hurricane hit
