As the world’s largest volunteer coast guard force, the United States Coast Guard has been providing coastal communities with lifesaving assistance since 1915. The Coast Guard also provides a valued service to society by deterring crime and promoting maritime safety. In 1931, the Coast Guard was established as an arm of the Treasury Department and is now part of the Department of Homeland Security. The Coast Guard’s mission is to maintain law and order on our nation’s coasts, provide marine search and rescue capabilities, promote maritime trade and navigation, support Federal security interests, protect public health and welfare, and conserve our environment. The history of coast guard gift giving begins in Cayce, South Carolina in 1915 when Capt. John Wesley Powell (1862-1937) became Commandant at Fort Sumter. As Commandant he urged gifts for local units from all over America in recognition of their bravery during World War I efforts including donations of munitions to help win that war. He also encouraged members of Congress to start offering gift subscriptions for items such as uniforms or equipment to be given as Christmas presents to local military units stationed on our coastlines. It wasn't until 1922 that Captain John Atherton (1873-1958) took over command at Fort Sumter after Captain Powell's death from a heart attack at age 53 years old while on leave from his duty as Commandant at Fort Sumter vacation home in Hilton Head Island off Ofallon Island SC). Atherton instituted many new programs which included monthly "Christmas present" shipments throughout the fortifications; establishment of a souvenir shop inside the fort where citizens could purchase postcards advertising special events orFort Sumter's role in US Naval operations during World War II; distribution of Christmas cards featuring picturesque scenes around Charleston Harbor; establishment within Headquarters Staffquarters - located adjacent to State House (now known as City Hall) -of a store/entertainment area specifically devoted to gifts for state troopers who patrolled our coastline through summer months; provisioning by ship each month with necessary supplies for state troopers' use ashore along with some interesting personal items like radios which were then used by state troopers during their patrols...such as establishing radio contact with other states participating in Atlantic Treaty Organization ();and even authorizing issuance of honorary membership certificates entitling individuals either full member or associate member status with the organization (). In 1935 Captain Harry Wetherbee (1892-1966), who had previously served as Assistant Commandant under Captain Atherton at Fort Sumter before becoming Acting Commander there upon Atherton's retirement assumed command permanently at Fort Pierce Florida after being selected by President Franklin D Roosevelt for his successful leadership abilities during Operation Neptune's Spear against Japan (). Wetherbee instituted changes such as daily inspection/repair work on all facilities including barracks buildings inside fortification walls rather than just those near shoreline where ships berth ];establishment within Headquarters Staffquarters - located adjacent to State House (now known as City Hall) -of an entertainment area specifically devoted completely to gifts for state Troopers who patrolled our coastline through summer months;; authorization issuance of honorary membership certificates entitling individuals either full member or associate member status withthe organization ();and even establishing daily inspections/repair work on all facilityincluding barracks buildings inside fortification walls rather than just those near shoreline where ships berth]; establishment within Headquarters Staffquarters - located adjacent to State House (now known as City Hall) -of an entertainment area specifically devoted entirelyto giftsfor state Troopers who patrolled our coastline through summer months;; authorization issuanceof honorary membership certificates entitling individuals either fullmemberor associate member status withthe organization ();and even establishing daily inspections/repair work on all facilityincluding barracks buildings inside fortification walls ratherer only those nearshoreline where ships berth]. Pierce Florida via mails containing various supplies including uniforms, tools, clothing etc.; distribution direct unto soldiers stationed ashore alongwith attractive postcards advertising special events taking place aboard Ft Pierce Florida such as launches landing American warships offshore during Naval exercises called Blue Water Navy exercises conducted annually off Ft PierceFlorida between May 1st thru October 15th.........Captain Harry Wetherbee left active duty service effective November 5th 1948 having led CCG across 50 years making him longest serving commanding officer ever.........With Lt Cmdr JF Gossage now commander duties have been handed down from Captains Harry Wetherbees father Capt Tubby E Hogg [aged 78] who passed away February 2nd 2017

Today, there are over 12,000 officers and employees in full or partial uniform across hundred countries working together to protect our coasts from storms, piracy, weapons smuggling and other crimes.

The USRC was a voluntary volunteer organization that operated from coastal communities in New York State and Maine. In 1916, the National Defense Reserve Fleet (NDRF) was created to provide maritime transportation for materials used in World War I. The NDRF consisted of 21 merchant ships and 1 military ship. In 1940, the United States Maritime Administration (USMA) was created to manage the NDFRP. The USMA increased its operations under the authority of Defense Department regulations governing naval shipping. On 15 October 1941, Secretary of Commerce Earl Warren issued an executive order establishing the Coast Guard as a Federal agency within the Department of Commerce and Labor. The first Coast Guard cutter, USCGC Chicago (CGC-1), was launched on 3 September 1946 from Speech Hill Point on Long Island Sound at 7:00 A.M.. She served as part of Astoria Sector until she decommissioned in 1977 because of budget cuts; however, her name lives on through her successor USCGC Honolulu (CG-10). On 1 November 1951, CG-5 became waterways patrol vessel #2 when she replaced USCGC Miami after she experienced problems with her engines while underway off North Carolina during hurricane season 1951-52; however, this resulted in only temporary repairs being made before she sailed back into service again two weeks later on 5 November 1951 On 9 July 1957 USS Tuscaloosa collided with HMAS Perth off Fremantle NSW after steering too close to shore during night activities; both vessels were towed back to Sydney Harbour where they were repaired before embarking for their next voyage that day On 16 August 1958 USS Valley Forge collided with HMAS Perth near Newcastle NSW after dark while making port calls during summer storms; both vessels suffered minor damage but Valley Forge continued sailing despite heavy seas while Perth grounded herself offshore for more than 24 hours During 1959-1960 weather conditions caused by Hurricane Beattie led to three occasions when rescueboats were called out to Tangier Strait between Australia and Morocco due to rough seas; all boats returned safely without incident each time
