Bluffton, South Carolina is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,546 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Anderson-Richmond Combined Statistical Area. Bluffton was founded in 1810 by English colonists as "Booth's Landing" on the then Indian River Plantation. It became a town in 1867 and has since grown to become one of the most populous towns in Spartanburg County. The town was originally called "Booth's Landing" because James Booth (1784-1842), an American Revolutionary War general and slaveholder from North Carolina who served as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the Siege of Savannah, moved his family and some slaves to what is now Bluffton in 1810. He named it for him and his brother John Booth, who had also helped establish Booth's Landing. At first there were only about 30 people living in Bluffton when it became a town. By 1870, however, its population had reached 1,100 people. In that year it built its first school building which still stands today - this was followed by many other buildings over time including a courthouse (1875), post office (1887), library (1907), Baptist church (1911) and two hospitals (1927). The biggest event to take place in Bluffton during its history was World War II when over 120 local men served with distinction during campaigns across Europe and North Africa; many were buried here after they died while fighting or being held prisoner overseas. Today Blufinton remains an agricultural center with dairy cattle production being one of its mainstay industries; cornmeal manufacturing also continues to be significant although these days much smaller shares of the economy are dedicated to this activity than earlier times. However some new businesses have emerged recently including Oneida Brewing Company which opened up shop here in late 2016; this brewery produces craft beers made using recycled materials such as waterGlass bottles that are then turned into beer cans before release into circulation
