Bluffton is a small town in South Carolina, United States. It is the county seat of Sumter County. The population was 7,912 at the 2010 census. Bluffton is located on the Eastern Panhandle of South Carolina and borders Witham to the north, Greenville to the east, Florence to the south, and Hilton Head Island to the west. Bluffton was founded by English colonists in 1743 as "Boat Harbor." In 1821 it became part of Sumter County, and in 1868 it became part of Kershaw County. It was incorporated as a city in 1902. On March 8, 1960, it received its current name from General Robert E. Lee who served as Mayor from 1897 until his death in 1865. The history of Bluffton goes back to early colonial days when English settlers arrived in what is now Sumter County with hopes of establishing a permanent colony there. A landing site for these new arrivals was found at present-day Bluffton Harbour on December 12, 1685 by Captain John Smith while exploring along North and East Carolina coasts looking for new land to colonize after his voyages across those seas that year. In 1743 British colonists named Boat Harbor after their ship HMS Dolphin which had dockside storage space for goods awaiting shipment out into False Creek Sound on Old Fort Sumter (present day Charleston). This initial landing site would become one of many throughout South Carolina over time including Port Royal (1748), Darlington (1770), Newberry Point (1780), Kings Bayou Landing(1801), Beaufort (1810) and Ninety Nine Mile Beach Landing(1835). The first European settler known to have resided permanently in present-day Bluffton Township came overland from England on horseback around late September or October 1749/early October 1700 during Colonel James Grant's unsuccessful attempt at founding an independent Colony called Grantsborough near modern day Greenville Junction on then unincorporated section 23rd Street between Avery Avenue and US 54E today's downtown Greenville area; so named because Colonel James Grant himself led all those involved – men & horses – this abortive attempt which failed due mainly to adverse weather conditions including severe thunderstorms that closed most roads within several miles & destroyed much property; also resulted largely from criticism by Indian Chief Gwendolyn Coates & her husband Choctaw Nation Potawatomi leader Etowah Cushman about non-native white settlement adjacent thereto (& thereby encroaching upon hunting grounds): probablyCachekoma River Valley where very high sandhills parallel Coastal Range formation underlying alluvial soils extending northeastward some 22 Miles: equidistant from Savannah River mouth 2½ Miles NNW: All pretty much swampy country back then! The history of the national guard is a long and convoluted one. There are many different stories about how this organization came to be, but one that is often given credence is that it was created as a way for states to supplement their military with conscripts. The first National Guard units were organized in 1792 during the French and Indian War. The army was short of soldiers, so the states pooled their resources and formed militias to provide some manpower. Over time, however, it became clear that the National Guard wasn’t really adequate to combat full-blown wars or protect critical infrastructure. In 1814, President James K. Polk ordered all state militias disbanded because he felt they weren’t meeting his expectations. He needed an effective fighting force in case of war with Mexico, so he turned to the federal government for help. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln designated 10 percent of all federal troops as the National Guard; this was done in order to make sure that there would be no more state militias joining up with Confederate forces. The Union Army quickly grew large enough to require its own corps of national guardsmen and Lincoln authorized additionalNational Guards units within 2 years; these new unit were called “Regulars†because they were not subject to recall or replacement like militia officers were. This increase in National Guard personnel meant that larger events (such as parades) could be handled by smaller numbers of soldiers which helped keep morale high among those serving in uniform. By 1865, when General Ulysses S Grant announced his decision not to pursueorashipof Richmond following the surrender of Johnston at Appomattox Court House, mostunitsoftheNationalGuardhadbeen disbanded or converted into other forms of martial law enforcement such as police departments or firefighters

Bluffton is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Bluffton was made on August 15, 1795 by British soldiers stationed at Fort Moultrie on the Savannah River as part of General Jameson's expedition against Robert Morris and his Patriots. Colonel John Anderson, a member of that expedition and one of its original organizers, erected a log cabin here on November 5, 1795. A post office called "Anderson" was established in 1802 by Major John Anderson with headquarters at this location until it was discontinued in 1814. Anderson's cabin still stands today and can be visited for free from April through October during daylight hours only. In honor of Colonel John Anderson's memory, a small park located near the intersection of Dutchmans Lane and Courthouse Road contains an open-air museum depicting life at that early period in Bluffton's history. In 1814 the present site of Bluffton became part of Spartanburg County when it was organized from portions of Charleston County. The county courthouse and jail were built here between 1840 and 1845; both are still standing today (although they have been greatly renovated). This location served as the county seat from its establishment until 1857 when Columbia became the new county seat due to its larger area and more developed infrastructure. In 1924 manufacture began taking place at Pee Dee Mills here which produced celery for local markets before closing down in 1992 but has since been repurposed into various businesses including apartments and some retail space within city limits adjacent to Memorial Stadium/Pee Dee University where football games are played annually outside temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit or 40 degrees Celsius
