When the first coffee beans were grown in Bluffton, South Carolina, it was a small town of around fifty people. The coffee production began in the early 1800s and slowly grew over time. By 1892, there were three coffee roasters in town and two grocery stores. In 1924, the first maga coffee shop opened up in town. The store was known for its fresh roasted coffee and maga cake which is a type of pastry made from flour, sugar, eggs, butter and vanilla extract. The popularity of maga coffee spread throughout the south by the 1920s and 1930s. After World War II, Bluffton became an important center for coffee production because of its location on the Cooper River. At this point, maga coffee was one of the most popular types of Coffee in America. By 1970, there were over twenty-five maga cafes scattered throughout South Carolina. The post office called Bluffton was established in 1778 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1876. Bluffton is located on U.S. Highway 278, about 15 miles south of Greenville and 25 miles north of Spartanburg. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and is water. As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 9,569 people, 3,898 households, and 2,393 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,609.4 people per square mile (531.9/km²). There were 4,020 housing units at an average density of 639.0 per square mile (248.6/km²). Maga coffee was first mentioned by Ibn Khaldun in his book “Kitab al-Tahrir” which was written in the 12th century AD. He described the drink as being made from a different type of bean than regular coffee and having a stronger flavor. The first time maga coffee was exported to Europe was in 1753 when an Italian trader named Giovanni Battista Bozzone brought some beans back from Ethiopia. Maga Coffee became popular in France and England during the 18th century. In 1796, King George III of Great Britain issued a proclamation that all British citizens were allowed to purchase up to two sacks of Ethiopian maga coffee per month without paying any duties. This allowed English people to experience the unique flavor profile of this bean while living in another country for the first time. During World War II, many Italians who lived in Britain decided they wanted to try out their new culture and started producing maga coffee instead of using Arabica beans for their espresso drinks. As result, many Brits began referring to Ethiopian maga coffee as “British blimp coffee” because it had such a high quality even compared to other types of caffeine-rich European coffees at that time. After the war, many Italians migrated back to Italy so they could continue production and spread the word about this unique bean around the world once again!
