Bluffton, South Carolina was founded in 1795 by Captain James Cook as a trading post on the Savannah River. The town was named for Bluffton, England, where Cook had been stationed before his journey to Asia. After the end of the American Revolution and until 1820, Bluffton was a frontier village located near present-day Clemson University. It began to grow after an increase in trade with Charleston and other parts of South Carolina. In 1820, the town became part of South Carolina when it joined the state as a result of the Nationalist Party's victory in the U.S. Presidential election that year. In its early years, Bluffton was known for its coffee beans, which were exported both domestically and to Europe. The town also produced cotton and other crops until World War II when production switched to manufacturing munitions. After World War II, Bluffton experienced significant growth as a result of Interstate 95 and other development initiatives that transformed it into a major center for education and industry in southcentral SC. Bluffton is a small town in Pickens County, South Carolina. The population was 1,876 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Augusta, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by white settlers in 1827. It was named for General James Moncrieffe Bluff, who fought in the Mexican–American War and was a United States Senator from Georgia. In 1851, Bluffton became one of twelve towns in Pickens County to be chartered as cities; it remained an unincorporated community until 1912 when it became a city with its own government. In 1903, the first public school opened in Bluffton; it served students until 1957 when it closed due to low enrollment. In that year, the first high school opened in Bluffton and continues to serve students today. The city renovated and enlarged its original building which now houses the city's library system and several other municipal services including park care and street cleaning. The economy of Bluffton is mostly agricultural with some manufacturing operations located near downtown; however, recent years have seen increased development around Interstate 95 and various new restaurants and businesses opening up throughout town including two new shopping malls - One on I-95 just north of downtown (the Moody Center) and another off I-95 across from downtown (the Mall at Gateway).

Bluffton, South Carolina is a town in Kershaw County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,362 at the 2010 census. Bluffton is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the bluffs overlooking the Atchafalaya River and it became a town in 1876 when its post office was opened. The name "Bluffton" comes from an Indian word meaning "safe place."
Bluffton was founded in 1837 by Joshua Blount and his wife, Rachel. The town was named for a bluff on the Savannah River that overlooked the area. Joshua's father, Colonel James Blount, had served in the American Revolution and fought at Yorktown. In 1835, he sold the land around Bluffton to John Randolph, who built a cabin there. The town began to grow rapidly after Randolph started selling goods and services to farmers and settlers near it. In 1840, Randolph donated land to the Methodist Episcopal Church in honor of his friend General Robert Ewell Johnston. The church moved into its present building in 1851. In 1861, Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell Johnston attacked Union forces at First Bull Run Bridge over the Savannah River. Ulysses S. Grant responded with an attack on Confederate troops at Second Bull Run Bridge over the same river two weeks later. As a result of these attacks, many men and women died or were injured during fighting on both sides. By 1865, Union forces had driven all Confederate forces from South Carolina except for a small detachment located in Kingston upon Hull
