French also began selling bagels and other refreshments from his premises. By 1860, Frenchman had founded five more cafes throughout Bluffton. During the mid-19th century, demand for specialty coffees increased as technological advances improved brewing methods and made it possible to produce stronger cups of java than ever before. As a result of this growing demand, different roasters started opening their own establishments across town in what is now known as downtown Bluffton. Bluffton, South Carolina is a small town located in the northwestern part of the state of South Carolina. The population was 10,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area. Bluffton is home to an A&M University campus and many local businesses. Bluffton started as a small community on a plantation near modern day Spartanburg. In 1820, General David Dixon decided to move his army from Fort Fisher to Bluffton after learning that Charleston would not give up its independence until he did. The original settlers were white men who had purchased land in what is now Bluffton from Native Americans. The first school in Bluffton was built by Mrs. Dawson and Mr. Hines in 1825 or 1830s on land donated by Captain James Manningham and others who founded what is now Aiken County in 1794 during the British colonial period. In 1865, when Clemson University was established nearby, Mrs. Dawson donated additional land for use as their school yard which still exists today on Cemetery Road between Old Main Street and Memorial Drive (the present day intersection of these two streets). In 1881, Drury College opened their doors here with classes starting May 1st and lasting until September 15th due to space limitations at Clemson University which then moved into temporary quarters on October 14th before permanently occupying their current site across Depot Street from Old Main Street within months of opening actually! Classes continued until December 15th but due to some extenuating circumstances (elderly students’ health problems) Drury closed after just over one year instead of making it all the way through! A post office called "Bluffton" was established at this location about 1840 though no records exist documenting its existence beyond that date In 1860, when Clemson University was established nearby, Mrs. Dawson donated additional land for use as their school yard which still exists today on Cemetery Road between Old Main Street and Memorial Drive (the present day intersection of these two streets). After several years of being used as storage space by local farmers for goods they didn't want delivered to them because they were out of town during harvest time according to one source, Early American Tobacco Company leased property adjacent to where it stands currently back in 1887 from Simeon Wofford & Sons Merchants Merchants Warehouse Co., becoming known as "The Tobacco House". In 1898 they sold out to Mears & Harriman Hardware Store but continued operations under this name until 1934 when it went bankrupt . They vacated it completely around 1935/36 when United States Post Office constructed their new building adjacent to where it stands currently next door (formerly known as "Wofford's Place"). This building served both United States Postal Service functions (mailing mail there) and also housed early BLUFFTON POLICE STATIONS including Headquarters until 1965 when those functions were transferred inside newly constructed GREENVILLE POLICE STATION which can be seen across Depot Street fromOld MainStreet today!During World War IIBLUFFTON became home port for USS PINEYARDUS(LST-541) - America's first nuclear powered warship - operating out OF GREENVILLE FROM OCTOBER 1943 TO APRIL 1945 while also conducting air patrols over SOUTH CAROLINA airspace providing important protection against Japanese submarines .....during later years anchorages along THE WATERSHED provided necessary anchorage while underway while other ships moored offshoreColonial era buildings still extant include: Agrarian Era homesteads dating back 2 ½ centuries including: Mrs.-Dawson house; Hines house; Mannings house; Goodall slave cabin; Pickens planter’s store; Fenton mill complex including dam completion circa 1800 +/- Also extant are portions Of Armstrong family farmstead including slave quarters circa 1700 +/-Also existing are parts Of McIntosh family farmstead including slaves' fields circa 1800 +/- These former residences/ structures provide unique insights into various aspectsof early 20th century life in Bluffston vicinity . Bluffton, South Carolina is a small town located in Fairfield County, South Carolina. The population was 3,500 at the 2000 census. Bluffton is one of the oldest towns in Fairfield County and was founded by English settlers in 1795. It was named for General William Blount, who had been cavalry commander during the American Revolution. The first store in Bluffton opened on Main Street in 1811. The town rapidly grew due to its strategic location and its natural resources, including coal and cotton plantations. By 1832, Bluffton had a school and three churches: the Methodist Episcopal Church, which served as the town's main services provider; and two Baptist Churches. In 1835, local schoolteacher Jeptha Knight erected a wooden frame courthouse that still stands today near what is now Post Office Square. In 1865, after Union troops burned down part of nearby Lexington to prevent it from becoming Confederate territory, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered his army to march through Fairfield County on their way north to join up with Union forces at Chattanooga. On July 10 of that year, while leading his army into town to dinner at Mrs. King's house on Market Street (now known as Independence Hall), Grant discovered that parts of town wereburning down and ordered his men not to stop for dinner but continue marching forward without stopping until they reached Lexington Avenue (now Broadwalk). When they got there later that night, they found that allofthe buildings inside downtown Lexington had been burned down as well-including Mrs. King's home! A public outcry ensued throughout much of South Carolina over this terrible burning campaign; within weeks most ofBLUFFTON'S buildings were either rebuild or replaced! After the Civil War ended in 1865, many English settlers returned to BLUFFTON-among them Judge John Ladd-and resumed its growth rate before reaching 4200 residents by 1880. After World War I began with America's entry into World War I on April 6th 1917 via Congress' declaration of war against Germany based on her unrestricted submarine warfare program known as "The Zimmermann Telegram," BLUFFTON quickly became an important military center because it housed many components of America's new Fifth Fleet Commands stationed along both coasts of North America during wartime period (later called Fifth Fleet Atlantic Command). Numerous businesses were started here during these years such as Wesson Shoes Company (which became Wesson Firearms) and Mutual Life Insurance Company which continued operations until 1964 when it merged with Allstate Insurance Corporationqv . During this time too numerous homes were built here especially along Harding Boulevard eastward from Main Street including one completed in 1924 by then Mayor James Henson which has since become listed on the National Register of Historic Placesve . Numerous other homes have also been built since then such Assemblies Inc., Ford dealership moved out lots next door backhand side all inclusive took place across street when company closed doors closing lot sales went thru Out side building
