Beaufort is a town located in South Carolina. The population was 9,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson County, SC, Metropolitan Statistical Area. Beaufort is known for its naval and military history as well as its production of cotton and other crops. The first place where Europeans discovered Beaufort was on July 3, 1692 when Captain James Cook sighted it on his mapping mission. In 1743 Governor John Rutledge founded a small settlement here after purchasing land from the native people who had beencultivating this area for centuries. The first store opened in 1744 and by 1801 there were twelve stores in the town. By 1800 Beaufort had become an important port with warehouses and shipsyard capable of handling 500 tons of goods per day. A school was built in 1805 and two churches were constructed in 1807 and 1830 respectively. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived at Fort Sumter to lead his army against Union General Ulysses S Grant; but he soon realized that he could not invade Charleston without assistance from Beaufort which would have given away his position to Union forces. He therefore ordered his troops to march through Beaufort instead which caused many civilian casualties along the way including five women and five children killed when their coach overturned while traveling between Fort Jackson (now Andersonville) and Beaufort Junction (now Holland). To avoid any such incidents happening again, Ulysses S Grant ordered MajorGeneral Alfred Fisher to establish a pontoon bridge over Gibbs Creek so that supplies arriving by boat could be unloaded on shore without being damaged or diverted downriver to Fort Sumter for storage or transport back across the river by wagon train or boat. This pontoon bridge became known as "Fisher's Bridge". Although fighting did take place during the Civil War here at home between Confederate soldiers under General Robert Ewell's command and Union soldiers under Ulysses S Grant's command, most significant events took place outside of town – such as Operation Crossroads which resulted in more than 100 Confederate prisoners being exchanged into Union hands south of Augusta before finally surrendering near Kinston days later; or Sherman's March through South Carolina which destroyed 370 miles (560km) of railroad lines east of Savannah Georgia bringing much needed desperately needed goods directly to our homes rather than having them sent via rail convoy thru Georgia only to experience massive shortages upon arrival due to weather conditions back home

Coffee became more commercialized during the 19th century as new methods of production were developed such as roasting beans on site or using forced air roastings. The advent of Prohibition in America caused a decrease in consumption nationwide; however, this didn't stop Europeans from continuing to enjoy their favorite beverage overall.
Beaufort was founded in 1729 by James Beaufort and his wife, Elizabeth. The town was named for the Duke of Beaufort, who had served as a British representative in the American Revolution. The Dukes donated land to the town and helped to build its first courthouse. In 1848, Beaufort became an independent city and was renamed Fort Orange after President George Washington’s fort at that location. In 1865, Beaufort became a state capital when South Carolina seceded from the United States. In 1870, it became one of the original ten counties of Charleston County. In 1900, Beaufort became a U.S.-owned military base and served as such until 1945. It has also been used for agricultural purposes since then. Today, Beaufort is known for its fishing industry and its reconstructed historical district which includes many old buildings dating back to before the Revolutionary War and Reconstruction era.
