When Beaufort was first settled in 1821, there were few things to trade with the ocean. The only other means of exchanging goods with the outside world was by bartering, which did not work well because of the distances between settlements. One early Marine gift history is that of Mr. George King who donated a small number of clamshell skiffs to be used as trading vessels on the tidal seas off South Carolina. These skiffs would come in handy for carrying cargo and passengers back and forth between Beaufort and Charleston, along with farther out to Sea Island and Hilton Head. In 1841, Commodore James Wylie sailed his USS Constitution into Beaufort Harbor for the first time ever. It was an auspicious event because it meant that Beaufort had finally become a port town! The most significant marine gift in Beaufort’s history is undoubtedly that of Admiral Arleigh Burke’s USS sailboat USS Stevens (1918). Admiral Burke gave this vessel as a present to his friend General John Cordon during World War I in order to help ferry supplies back and forth between England and France. Beaufort is a small town in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census, down from 2,041 at the 2000 census. It is part of Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson County. The original courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1865 and rebuilt using Federal architecture at what is now known as Courthouse Square. The courthouse building also served as home to the county executive for many years until its demolition in 2006 to make way for new development including an arena and high school located adjacent to nearby First Baptist Church which has been home to local high school sports teams since 1906

Beaufort is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg metropolitan area. Beaufort was founded by James Robertson and named for General John Beaufort, who led British forces during the American Revolution. The first store in Beaufort opened on May 25, 1795 in what is now downtown. In 1812, one of the earliest mills in Beaufort was built on Duck creek by Nicholas Sloat and others. By 1840 there were five stores and fifty-eight homes in town. In 1854, a school was erected on land donated by Mrs. Elisha Beasley and it became the first public school in Beaufort Township. The first post office opened in Beaufort on April 6, 1865 under the name of Smithsport with Averell Mosely as its first director. One of many businesses started or expanded during this time period was Lumber Liquidators which operated until 1981 when it merged with Sam’s Club to form Sam’s Club Corporation (the modern day Macy’s). In 1969, construction began on the Jethro Tull Museum which opened in 1970 and has since been recognized as one of the most successful urban development projects ever mounted within South Carolina architectureurally speaking. In 1984 an unsuccessful attempt was made to add an airport to town limits but this project never materialized due to lack of funds from private investors.. In 2006 an ordinance proposing annexation by Greenville failed after being opposed by residents living adjacent to Fort Sumter National Monument who contended that annexation would impact their archaeological resources Although annexed into Greenville County; Beaufort continues to maintain its own government with a sheriff and court system
In 1847, Beaufort was the site of a skirmish between Confederate forces and Union cavalry. The battle resulted in the death of two Union troopers and the wounding of several others.
