Beaufort is one of the oldest settlements on the East Coast of America and has been inhabited by people for over 400 years. The town was founded in 1763 by Captain James Dearborn and his wife Elizabeth Shortt. The town became a port and trade center for the area and developed into a small but prosperous community with commercial fishing, shipbuilding, farming, and logging operations. The first settlers in Beaufort were those who had come overland from North Carolina during the early 1800s. They arrived in small groups and built their homes near the mouth of river Toombs Creek. By 1810 most of these pioneers had left for other parts of South Carolina because of difficult economic conditions caused bya combination of factors such as disease brought over by British soldiers stationed in Charleston at that time, an expensive Indian war fought between Britain and Spain that resulted in many American captives being taken prisoner (known as “the captures”), low cotton prices due to exceptional weather conditions around that time, abundant timber resources available due to favorable topography, high Seminole rates for labor (due to their fear of white men), severe competition among slaveholders for access to African slaves (due to increasing demand from newly acquired Southern states), agricultural difficulties caused by lack of rainfall during winter months which resulted in mudslides; high taxes levied against farmers; scarce land; limited access to education; lack of transportation options across state lines; etc.), all contributed to what can be calledsouth Carolinian poverty throughout much Of its history. In 1871 Captain John Sowles bought 1/4 mile (0.8 km) northeast of present-day Beaufort along Toombs Creek from Colonel William Troup Sr., owner–operatorof a plantation known as Upper Ashley Plantation. At this point there were only two houses remaining standing on the original site whereCaptain John Sowles now resides some 67 years later when he purchased his land from Colonel Troup Sr.. He organized local fishermen into companies which engaged in vesselbuilding and fishing activities off shore until about 1903 when electric trolling motors came onto the scene providing new opportunities for business development ashore rather than relying solely upon traditional methods such as vessel building or fisheries operation offshore.
