The South Carolina Air Force was activated in 1947 and its first squadron, the 9th Fighter Squadron, was assigned to Beaufort Municipal Airport. The initial purpose of the air force was to provide fighter protection for military installations and other public interests. In 1959, the 1st Tactical Missile Squadron was activated at Beaufort AFB and began providing short-range nuclear deterrence missile defense capabilities. The 1st Tactical Missile Squadron became operational as a unit of the Air National Guard in 1966 when it converted from Republic F-104 Thunderjets to Lockheed C-130 Hercules transports. The permanent installation of an KC-135 Stratotanker at Beaufort AFB in 1978 led to the activation of the 1st Wing which is currently responsible for all Air Force tactical aircraft stationed in South Carolina. Air Force personnel have fought in many wars including World War II (1941-1945), Vietnam (1964-1973), Operation Desert Storm/Operation Iraqi Freedom (1991-1998), Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Afghanistan (2006-present) and Operation Noble Eagle/Operation Neptune’s Spear (2009). Aircraft used by the South Carolina Air Force include: B-1B Lancer bomber; Boeing E–4D Sentry AWACS; Boeing E–3B Prowler airborne warning and control system; McDonnell Douglas MD‑2H Skymaster maritime patrol helicopter; Northrop Grumman T‐45C Talon Warrior tanker; Lockheed Martin F‐16 Fighting Falcon fighter jet; Airbus A380 passenger plane.
There is no doubt that the air force has been a long and proud part of the United States military. The USAF was founded on August 29, 1947 as the United States Air Force Reserve. Today, there are more than 66,000 active duty members in the USAF. In addition to its combat role, the air force also plays an important role in domestic security. The Beaufort County Air Force Base gift history goes back to 1951. The base was founded on December 1, 1951 as Beaufort Army Air Field. It was redesignated as Beaufort Air Force Base on September 9, 1957 and became the operational home of the South Carolina Air National Guard. In 1967, AFB became a component of the Continental United States Military District. On October 25th, 1987 AFB merged with Charleston International Airport which made it one of the largest military airports in South Carolina by area.
Beaufort is a small town located in Ashley County, South Carolina. The population was 1,001 at the 2010 census. Beaufort is home to the Beaufort Naval Air Station and the Ashley-Fort Smith Regional Airport. The first settler in Beaufort were two men from North Carolina, Jobson and Pritchett, who landed on Catawba Island in 1785. They built a log cabin and started trading with local Native Americans. By 1811, they had founded their own town on Catawba Island named after themselves, Beaufort. The original town was destroyed by a hurricane in 1815 but was rebuilt and renamed after General James Moore Beal who helped lead American forces during the American Revolution. In 1848, John Cushing established what is now known as Cushing’s Mill which became one of the earliest textile mills in America. In 1865, when Charleston acquired its independence from North Carolina, Beaufort became part of Charleston. The mill closed around 1900 but reopened as an airplane hangar in 1922. Beaufort also has several smaller businesses including a post office and bank which remain active today. The economy of Beaufort relies mainly upon agricultural production such as cotton and rice; however, recent efforts have been made to revive the community by creating new businesses or expanding existing ones such as hotel/motel development or retail opportunities within the city limits only

The Association of American Aircraft Manufacturing (AAM) was founded in 1944 by then-Secretary of the Air Force Curtis LeMay. The AAM is a non-profit organization composed of manufacturers, distributors, and service providers of military aircraft.
Beaufort, South Carolina is a small town located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 5,044 at the 2010 census. Beaufort played an important role in early American history and has been cited as an example of how a small town can thrive and prosper during hard times. Beaufort was founded by General James Wofford on December 13, 1778, after he recaptured Fort Duquesne from the French in what is now Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Wofford named his settlement Beaufort after his friend and mentor, Admiral Robert Maynard Beauchamp. After Wofford's death in 1780, his son John took over leadership of the community and it grew rapidly under his guidance. In 1802 Governor John Cushing designated Beaufort as their seat of government for all of Charleston County which included present-day Beaufort County. In 1814 the Ulysses S Grant renamed Beaufort "Washington" after President James K. Polk while serving as military governor ofSouth Carolina during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). The first post office opened at Beaufort on October 15, 1800; it continued operating until February 1, 1903 when it closed due to lack of mail service to much smaller towns within Charleston County such as Hilton Head Island and Columbia River Port Royal within that time period! construction on what would become known as Jackson Street began on November 3rd, 1828 with groundbreaking taking place two weeks later on December 10th by local builder/contractor James Fenton who had also built Charleston's first courthouse! The cornerstone for this building was laid by Mayor & CTO James Gadsden just three days later! This landmark structure served as both a city hall (for City Council meetings) and jail until 1889 when it became known as the original courthouse annexe before being demolished in 1969! On January 1st 1865 Confederate general Averell Harriman set up headquarters adjacent to Main Street which quickly became an officer encampment for troops stationed along coastal SC lines during the Civil War! Heading into its third decade since its founding only one other business still exists today: Harbor Freight Incorporated – which opened in 1954 - providing local residents with fresh seafood products from their boat docks ashore through its 800+ sq ft storeroom including a variety of marine supplies! Noteworthy too are that this business has never moved out from its location despite numerous hurricanes passing through Charleston Bay over ensuing decades reducing beachfront property values thereby adversely impacting future generations - something many may not have considered given today's more expansive shorelines available without any significant economic detriment)!
Beaufort was founded in 1751 by the explorer, James Beaufort. The town became a major trading post on the Indian River and was known for its cloth merchants and its salt trade. In 1864, Beaufort was renamed Charleston after the city of Charleston, South Carolina, which had been founded by white settlers in 1795.
