Anderson is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,297 at the 2010 census. It is the home of North Anderson High School and the Anderson Municipal Airport. The first settler in what is now Anderson was Mr. Fenton who went to live on a plantation near Fort Sumter in 1814. He married Miss Stowell and their children were: James (1815-1845), John (1817-1872), Elizabeth (1819-1928) and Alice (1822-1910). In 1824, John Fenton's father died and he took over his estate which included land that would eventually become part of Anderson. In 1830, James Fenton moved from his original plantation to begin operations as a planter here with some slaves helping him out. In 1832, Andrew Jackson was elected President of the United States and soon after began packing upAnderson for Yankee occupation by moving all its citizens into newly built barracks located on present day US 21 north of town. Confederate General Robert Ewell led an army through Spartanburg County during Jackson's inaugural year to attack these people but they successfully defended themselves and drove back the invaders.
