In 1847, a group of coffee farmers in the Mexican state of Jalisco began planting coffee beans in an area that is now part of El Paso, Texas. The first beans were grown on the banks of the Rio Grande. Coffee was originally traded as slaves from Africa and Asia to Spanish colonists in what is now Mexico City. In 1849, Antonio Gomez developed a process for processing coffee beans that allowed them to be packed in near-freezing water and sold at below cost to merchants throughout New Spain (modern day Mexico). By 1861, Gomez’s process had spread to Honduras and Nicaragua. From there it reached Colombia where it was soon replaced by Arabic ground coffee production.
Anderson was founded in 1786 by Captain David Anderson and his family. The town was named after General Robert Anderson, the hero of the Battle of Bunker Hill. It became a small market town with a population of around 60 in 1831. In 1860, Anderson voted to secede from the United States and form its own state. The following year, it Joined Confederate States of America (CSA). In 1861, Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, resulting in the death of over 100 soldiers and civilians. Anderson's citizens responded by taking arms and defending their town indefenselessly until Union reinforcements arrived. After two months of fighting, Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th, 1865. National troops then burned down all remaining buildings within the town as part of an effort to erase any evidence that resistance existed outside of POW camps for Confederates surrendered at Appomattox Court House
