On November 5, 1861, the Confederate States of America (CSA) was formed from the former slave states of Virginia and North Carolina. The CSA consisted of 11 southern states that seceded from the Union, including Anderson County in South Carolina. In 1862, Anderson's military population was only 1 person. However, on December 12th, 1862, Confederate soldiers invaded Anderson with a force of 10 men and began plundering the town. This event is known as the "Anderson Raid". The raid caused such alarm in Anderson that General Pemberton ordered his army to deploy to protect the town. On January 3rd 1863, General Pemberton's army arrived in Anderson and deployed into battle against Confederate forces stationed at Rocky Mount near present-day Greenville. The Battle of Rocky Mount resulted in a significant victory for General Pemberton's forces and ended Reconstruction in South Carolina. As a result of this battle, black soldiers were finally given their own military units within the Confederate Army!
Anderson is a small town located in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. The population was 7,684 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Anderson micropolitan area and is located on the Yadkin River. Anderson's history dates back to 1814 when it was named for General James Anderson, who fought in the American Revolution. The town was originally a slave farming community and has since become an agricultural center with a large cotton crop and two hospitals. In recent years, Anderson has seen growth as a bedroom community for Greenville and its surrounding rural areas. The Town of Anderson was organized on December 3, 1814 by General James Anderson as one of over 100 townships that constituted the new state of South Carolina. At first, all land within this township were owned by slaves or their owners’ families. After several years of growth, however, it became evident that more people than could be accommodated living within these limits so a second election was called in 1830 to determine which “large” township would be formed from the remaining villages within Anderson Township (now part of Greenville). This vote resulted in incorporation as the Town of Anderson on February 1st 1830 by unanimous vote of all present inhabitants thereof! In less than two decades after its incorporation into South Carolina – despite many challenges including secession –Anderson had become one of America’s most important agricultural centers with a major cotton crop and two hospitals providing much needed medical care during times of war and famine throughout America. Additionally, due to its location on topographic features ideal for agriculture such as deep water waterfront wells used for irrigation purposes;the Town prospered economically until well into World War II when coastal shipping restrictions made cotton production impossible without expensive Long Beach Harbor facilities;and then local industry slowly declined until 2000 when Magellan Air National Guard Base opened up new acres beside downtown making possible again significant economic development! Today Mayor Darrell Keyes states "The Town [of]Anderson thrives because we work together." Beginning in 1865 when Confederate troops burned down what remainedof our town hall -our founding fathers did not give up Easthampton County just yet!!! The first people to live in Anderson were Native Americans who had been living there for many years before European settlement began. The area that is now Anderson was first settled by white settlers in 1811. The first families to arrive at Anderson were farmers and their families. In 1816, two brothers named John and George Fayette erected a cabin on what is now Main Street in Anderson. The Fayette family stayed in Anderson until 1828 when they moved to Spanish Fort on Roanoke Island. In 1830, Anderson became the county seat of Beaufort County. In 1861, it became the capital of South Carolina when Ashley (now Charleston) was renamed as the state capital. In 1865, after Confederate General Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House,Anderson became part of Unionism and was merged into Beaufort County. On April 9, 1870, Anderson residents voted to rename their community “Anderson” after Andrew Johnson, President of the United States during Reconstruction Era. Anderson has experienced various changes throughout its history including becoming an agricultural center during prohibition era; experiencing rapid growth following World War II; struggling through the Great Recession; and undergoing significant redevelopment over the past few decades which has seen a increase in population and businesses along with new development announced for downtown areas such as Fountain Square and North Myrtle Beach metropolitan area which are all within easy reach of central city neighborhoods like downtown Atlanta or Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Parkway/I-95 Corridor
Anderson was founded in 1818 by Hugh McDowell and his wife, Eliza. The town grew rapidly during the antebellum period, becoming a center of trade and industry. In 1865, Anderson became the county seat of Rutherford County. The Anderson-McDowell cotton gin was built in 1869, the first cotton gin in South Carolina. The gin produced high-quality cotton for export. The McDowell family remained active in Anderson until their death in 1923. In 1970, the city of Anderson merged with neighboring Greenville to form the current city of Greenville-Anderson.
