The area where Aiken currently stands was first settled by African Americans in 1848 as part of what would become Sumter County. In 1860, when Confederate General Robert E. Grant's command

John married Mary Frances in 1927 and the two started making yearly donations to the NRA as wedding presents for their friends and family members (John was also one of the original directors of the NRA). This tradition continues today with George’s grandson, Jay Pappas III, giving away shotguns at various NRA events. 2. Larry Bird gave his daughters an AR-15 rifle in 1984 when they were freshmen at college. Aiken is a town in York County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Aiken was founded by English colonists in 1776 as the trading post of Augusta. It became a town in 1881 and was named for General James Aiken, an officer in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. The first settler in what is now Aiken was John Sikelford who arrived on horseback from North Carolina on November 20, 1776. His brother-in-law David Alline also came to Plantation Point (now downtown) that same year. On December 15 of that year, John Sikelford erected a shelter for himself and his family with logs he had brought overland from Catawba County. In early January 1777, three negro men working for Captain Edward Travis went ashore on Horry Island and reported finding sugarcane and other crops growing thereabouts. They were acting as guides for a group of white men exploring the area for new land grants which would later be given to Samuel Cooper and others. In March 1777 Major James Wilkinson sailed out from Savannah with a party of thirteen soldiers to explore what is now Charleston Harbor but found no suitable sites for settlement; instead he landed his troops at Frenchman's Inlet on May 10th and founded Fort Moultrie near present day Springhill Avenue and Columbia Street within two months of its establishment. This initial attempt by Wilkinson to establish military posts along the coast failed because there were too many hostile natives living amongst the local people who had been warned about him by their Indian friends; instead Wilkinson turned his attention towards developing trade connections with England through purchases made at London's port of Plymouth via captain Walter Raleigh's ship "Natchez". Wilkinson returned home after four months fruitless travel when he heard back from Raleigh informally that There had been an opening at Savannah for a Lieutenant Colonel commanding forces against Spanish pirates operating off Cape Fear River; accordingly Wilkinson set sail again on July 5th aboard HMS Victory with orders to land several hundred riflemen under Colonel Troupes at or near Wilmington on Cape Fear River where they would march inland to harass Spanish shipping before invading Spain itself should successful operations be deemed necessary. He reached Wilmington only days after its capture by Commodore Ebenezer Farragut during Admiral Robert Fulton's siege of Yorktown; thereafter Wilkinson sailed upriver feigning landfall until nightfall so as not torouse British suspicions thereby giving Farragut time enough illumination warships under Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter arrived offshore to bombard Fort Moultrie while Rear Admiral William Peele disembarked gunboats onto shore batteries just belowpresent day Tyner Drive having successfully destroyed both fortifications without resulting any loss of life). At dawn next morning Farragut advanced his ships into harbour whereupon Dixon Porter landed Marines under cover of artillery fire stormed ashore reverse winding ramp leading up beach past old Battery Stroud (now part of Tyner Drive), took possessionofthe fortifications abandoned by Richardson & Co., destroyed all stores & machinery inside& captured all except six prisoners including one sergeant major – all this accomplished without bloodshed or damage done whatsoever! One reason why this attack succeeded so well may have been due partly to bad weather which prevented vessels from reaching their destination whilst another factor may have been attributed to Royal Navy incompetence which resulted in units commanded by Commodore Richard Kemp being detached en route whilst Commander George Barclay seemed intent upon blockading Charleston rather than attacking Spanish vessels off Cape Fear river – an action which caused Rodney Hampton Roads naval squadron consisting principally chiefly pounders HMS Essex(flagship), HMS Hector( flagship) & HMVS Tigre(destroyer)to joinVsaraforceandengageandattackSpanishfleetbeforeHMS Cornwallis ( flagship), HMS Exeter&HMS Warrior got underwayfromPortsmouthtoBlockadeSpanishBayonAugust13th1815). Commodore Kemp subsequently received credit for saving Yorktown - one more instance proving that good seamanship can go hand-in-hand with bad luck!
