Aiken is a city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, located on the Ashley River. As of the 2010 census, Aiken had a population of 93,853 and was the third-most populous city in South Carolina after Columbia and Savannah. The area that would become Aiken was first settled by English colonists in 1663 as part of Charles Town County. The first town in what would become Aiken was Inmanborough, established in 1778 by Captain James Cook from London with help from Colonel Daniel Boone. Settlers built cabins along the river for fishing and trading opportunities; this area became known as "Boone's Ferry". In 1811, Dryden Parish was created within Charleston District 1 and Aiken's incorporation date is unknown but it likely occurred before that time due to its close proximity to Charleston. However, there is evidence that Onslow County may have been organized around this time as well since an early map shows both districts with their own courthouse buildings (now part of Clemson University). Aiken grew rapidly during the early 19th century due to exports from local plantations such as cotton and sugar cane; businesses soon cropped up throughout downtown including a bank, grocery store, and cigar factory - all still operating today. In 1831, an act passed by Congress authorized creation of Pickens County which included parts of modern-day Aiken along with adjacent slaves who were then owned by friends or family members until they were sold into slavery again during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. In 1851 local physician Dr John Coker opened his practice on Meeting Street near present day Dupont Highway; he became known for his successful surgeries on horses and humans alike which continues to be done today at nearby Meadowbrook Veterinary Hospital where he also served as President from 1984-1992

Aiken, South Carolina is a small town in the state of South Carolina. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Aiken was founded by Johnathan Aiken in 1811 as an ironworks and mill town. The town became a coal mining center after coal seams were discovered there in the early 20th century. Aiken has been home to major businesses and families since its incorporation as a city in 1907. The city's name comes from nearby Aiken Island, which is located on the Ashley River near downtown Aiken. The first white people to live in what is now Aiken arrived by boat from Savannah, Georgia around 1770. They named their new settlement "Henderson" after Colonel George Henderson, who had helped lead them there during the American Revolution. By 1800, Henderson had built several homes and some stores on what would become known as today's Main Street in downtown Aiken. In 1807, Mayor James Gadsden organized a meeting to discuss creating a city government for what was then just Henderson Creek Township. At that meeting, citizens voted to create the first municipality in South Carolina when they decided that they needed one because of lack of representation in county government caused by their location within Henderson Creek Township alone! On July 26th of that year, local officials laid out streets and boundaries for future cities when City Council president John Tryon proposed it as an amendment to council’s motion calling for increased postage rates on mail sent into Charleston from Davidson County due to increasing demand from residents living outside of City limits! This action set off a firestorm among some members of council because it signaled that City Hall could no longer be seen as an independent authority even though it housed all municipal proceedings! Despite outcry from citizens who saw this move as another example of corporate consolidation within our community (a common occurrence at this time), Mayor Gadsden decided against repealing the ordinance rescinding City Council’s independence! In 1810 Amanda Lenoir married Jonathan Allensworth – father-in-law of Nathaniel Hawthorne – located just east of present day downtown Aiken on Hilton Head Island (now mainland SC).
