The Aiken Air Force Base (AFB) was established in 1941 and is one of the largest military installations in the state of South Carolina. The AFB has a total area of 1,047 acres and houses more than 4,000 active duty members and civilians. The AFB is home to 546 aircraft including 452 fighter aircraft, 103 bomber aircraft, and 10 helicopter squadron. The AFB also offers a wide variety of auxiliary services such as engineering support, medical care, food service, housing for personnel on base, and recreational opportunities. The history of the AFB starts with World War I when Aiken was part of the Confederate States Army. After the war ended in 1865 Aiken became an independent city under the administration of Mayor John Horry. In 1907 Aiken became an airfield where pilots from all over South Carolina could train. By 1935 Aiken had grown to become one of South Carolina's premier airfields with a single hangar providing storage for seventeen planes. During World War II Air Force Base staff were activated at various times throughout South Carolina to provide support for Operation Torch which aimed to oust Axis forces from North Africa. On October 10th 1942 Air Force Lt Col Harry Wetherbee ordered construction began on what would eventually become known as Hangar One at AFB. This hangar would serve as headquarters for all activities related to fighter aviation at AFB throughout World War II until it was destroyed by fire in 1945. After the war Headquarters moved back to downtown Aiken but continued operations outgrowing their original facility until they opened a new building on Lee Street which served as Headquarters & Control Center during most hostilities at AFB between 1946-1948 inclusive before moving into their present location on July 1st 1949 with an additional wing added later that year making it 9 wings overall within AFB structure today! Air Force Base has been through many changes both large and small since its establishment days but none have impacted its culture more than recent years with HQ Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) now based here permanently! USSOCOM brings together some of America's most elite warriors who are specifically trained to execute high-risk missions outside our traditional battlefields! From counterterrorism operations in Latin America through counterinsurgency warfare in Afghanistan these special operators have brought about significant change not just at Air Force Base but throughout Southwest Florida!

In 1948, the Aiken Air Force Base was activated as a Military installation with the onset of World War II. The base housed fighter and bomber units that served in both Europe and South America. In 1957, the Aiken AFB Installation was redesignated as an Air Force Base. The following year, it became home to the 8th Bomb Wing, which was responsible for all American Bombers operations in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. In 1978, after being reactivated again due to the Cold War tensions between America and Russia, the 8BW moved from Aiken AFB to Whiteman AFB Missouri. Withdrawal of Forces from South Africa in 1994 led to a loss of 3 bases along with many buildings and equipment at Aiken AFB. However, thanks to host nation appropriations it has been able to keep most of its infrastructure intact including numerous hangars and airfields that can now be used by our military for training purposes or commercial use. Today, there are over 12 thousand active duty USAF personnel stationed at Aiken AFB making it one ofSouth Carolina's largest military installations
Aiken is a town in South Carolina. The population was 20,877 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Aiken County. Aiken was founded by English colonists in 1795 and named for Admiral George Washington's younger brother, Aiden. The original courthouse building, which is now a museum, burned down in 1871 and was replaced by what is now the courthouse Annex. The first white person to live in Aiken was James Cushing who settled there in 1822. He built a cabin on present-day Mount Pleasant Road. In 1824 Cushing married Julia Hutchison and they began to clear land around present-day Aiken Creek for farming purposes. They also built a mill on the creek for grinding corn and flour. In 1830 John Sibley came to live in Aiken and opened his own grocery store on Mount Pleasant Road nearpresent-day Midway Mall. This shop became one of the most important commercial businesses in town until it closed its doors in 1979 due to economic conditions within South Carolina at that time. An early settler from Georgia named Levi Sanders arrived here about 1840 with his family and began raising cotton plants along present-day Mount Pleasant Road east of town limits (now called Old Mill Road). He organized his slaves into gangs to work this valuable crop, which allowed him to purchase goods he couldn't otherwise afford without working them free himself. Sanders' plantation still stands today adjacent to Midway Mall off Old Mill Road outside of town limits while other parts of Sanders' property have been developed into residential areas such as Rock Hill Village and Magnolia Park across from Midway Mall; these developments are collectively known as "Sandersville". Aiken is a city in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina, United States. The population was 29,811 at the 2010 census. Aiken is the county seat of Aiken County and has a land area of 362 square miles (921 square km). The city's history goes back to 1827 when it was called "Aiken Plantation." It became an incorporated town in 1881. In 1907, Aiken was selected as the site of the first modern high school in South Carolina. The current high school building opened in 1966. According to local legend, on July 4, 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House to Union General Ulysses S. Grant and his forces after a three-day battle that began on June 25th and ended on July 1st. Many residents of Aiken took part in this event by raising Confederate flags from their homes or Displaying them at public locations such as churches or schools. After the surrender, many families moved away from Appomattox Court House due to fear for their safety; however some remainLegend has it that around 100 Aiken citizens gathered around Appomattox Court House every day throughout its duration to watch proceedings unfold
Aiken is a city in South Carolina and the county seat of Aiken County. The population was 45,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Aiken goes back to 1814 when it was founded as "Alma". Alma was a small town on the banks of the Ashley River. The first white settler to arrive in what is now Aiken was James Hance who built his cabin on land that would later be known as "Hance's Mill". In 1828, Alma voted to annex neighboring Augusta Township which made Aiken a municipally chartered city. In 1857, Augusta incorporated as a town and in 1861, Aiken annexed rural areas near Greenville and Columbia. When Greenville incorporation came about, it also added Avery and Whitehalgh Streets east of its downtown core for municipal purposes only. In 1865, white men started living among Native Americans in what is now Eastover within present day Aiken County. They began clearing land for farming which would become known as "Indian Territory" because it wasn't ceded to the United States by Indian tribes under Treaty No 2 in 1785-86 but instead became part of newly organized South Carolina through an act of Congress known as the Georgia Compromise (1815). This area became known as Eastover until Cherokee Nation acquired it from South Carolina for $3 million US dollars in 1893 after years of negotiations following Creek Removal operations led by President Andrew Johnson during his presidency
