When the Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry was formed in 1861, it was the first military unit in the state. The regiment had originated from Woonsocket, which is now part of Providence. The town had been founded by Loyalists during the American Revolution and was soon renamed for General George Washington. The volunteer infantry served in many battles throughout the Civil War, most notably at Gettysburg and Petersburg. After the war, many of these soldiers returned to their home towns and took up civilian life. However, a few troops remained in Rhode Island to serve out their remaining years in service to our state. One such unit was the 1st Battalion of Rhode Island Volunteers (RIRV), which traces its origins back to 1864 when it was organized as a company of riflemen at Faneuil Hall on Staten Island. In 1923, RIRV became an infantry battalion and began serving with distinction both within RI and abroad. Today, 2/1 RIRV still proudly guards our State’s borders and protects our citizens with expert tactics while contributing importantly to community service through its numerous outreach programs including disaster relief volunteers and blood drives. It is interesting to note that most military units are disbanded after a certain point – typically around retirement or when there is no longer need for them on active duty. However, this does not apply to 2/1 RIRV; rather, it remains fully intact today thanks largely to its dedicated members who continue providing quality service domestically and abroad!

It was not until 1795 that the militia was formally organized as a body distinct from the town government. In 1846, the navy acquired its first ship, HMS Constitution. With this acquisition, the navy became one of Rhode Island's key cultural icons.
Woonsocket is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 10,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Providence-Fall River-Woonsocket, RI Metropolitan Statistical Area. Woonsocket is home to Brown University and Rhode Island State University. The first Europeans to visit what is now Woonsocket were fishermen who set up their small trading post in 1636. In 1807, the town's first school was built and soon afterward there was a large increase in trade because of its location between Narragansett Bay and Providence Harbor. The early residents were mainly Quakers but by 1830 they had developed into a busy agricultural community with over 150 acres of land grown crops, livestock, and poultry. By 1860 most of the residents had left for better opportunities elsewhere in the United States or Europe but some few families remain until today as eminent citizens of Woonsocket village (now known as Allston). In 1835, Major Benjamin Hallowell founded a military outpost on high ground overlooking present day Woonsocket Village which he named Fort Hallowell after himself and his superior officers then stationed there during American Indian Wars against Native Americans. The fort served as an artillery battery during the American Revolution against British forces and also saw service during various wars including World War II as part of Allied Forces America under General Dwight D Eisenhower's orders to protect US interests in Eastern Europe. After many years it surrendered to Polish forces on 9 September 1945 following heavy fighting that followed when Warsaw capitulated to Soviet Union demands following World War II; all remaining buildings including barracks have been demolished since then although some photos still survive from that era showing personnel occupying these structures at night with lights burning inside while troops dug into positions around the complex…. The fort has long been popular among local historians for its historically significant place within history though it cannot be visited currently due to security concerns…. Although Fort Hallowell served primarily as a military installation it also became an important center for local commerce with stores selling goods such as clothing, shoes, salt water fish, flour etc., through well developed streets leading up to it from nearby residential areas….. Today much of what once constituted Fort Hollowell are gone but evidence remains from this period including remnants of buildings and equipment still extant along West Main Street…. For more than 350 years Fort Hallowell has retained its reputation as one of Rhode Island's most historic sites – a place where people came together for business purposes or cultural reasons rather than war or peacekeeping missions

The town sprang up around a small fishing village called Woonsocket Harbor. By 1793, Woonsocket had become a shipping and manufacturing center with mills and workshops that produced everything from textiles to cannons. In 1834, Woonsocket became an incorporated city with voting rights and has since grown into one of the most vibrant communities in central Rhode Island.
