The Marine Corps Deployed Gift History Program is a unique and special way for Marines to show their support of local businesses and organizations. MCDP was established in 1992 as a means for Marines to provide tangible gifts, such as items related to the Marine Corps or military service, to local business owners and organizations. Since its inception, MCDP has donated over $2 million in gift products and services to local businesses and organizations throughout Rhode Island. This year alone,MCDP will donate nearly $1 million in gifts! In addition to giving back to the community,MCDP also believes that through donations like this, Marine units can gain invaluable morale-boosting experience for their members. Woonsocket is a town in Rhode Island located on the east coast of the state. The population was 25,724 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous town in Providence County and one of its three cities. The first people to live in what is now Woonsocket were Native Americans who hunted and gathered resources near present-day Portsmouth. The first European to visit Woonsocket was Captain John Smith in 1608, when he went ashore from his ship "Providence" to take possession of land that lay between Portsmouth and Narragansett Bay. After landing, Smith discovered salt water swimming close to where he had landed and named it Sandy Hook because of this resemblance. In 1614, Englishman Nicholas Copperell settled along the Mystic River near present-day Warwick after being granted 1,000 acres (40 hectares) by King James I of England for his services during the English Civil War. He built a cabin there which later became known as Copperell's Hill. In 1765, when Rhode Island became a United States state, part of it included what is now Woonsocket Township. In 1801, after Rhode Island gained its independence from British rule, Woonsocket became an incorporated town with a population of 10 residents under Act No., No., 6 of 1802; these limits were unchanged until 1840 when they were increased to 20 residents per square mile (8 km²). On July 3rd, 1840 Bristol's incorporation into Providence County set off fireworks displays throughout central Rhode Island as part of New England's Fourth Of July celebration; these activities lasted until about 1830 or so due to difficulties getting enough volunteers for such an event each year On December 5th 1870 Woonsocket celebrated its founding with a dinner honoring then Mayor Samuel Fenton and Drs Benjamin Silliman (Medical Superintendent for Providence) Josephine Goodrich (Drinker), Alexander Dodge (Surgeon General), John Ruggles (Attorneys at Law) Ebenezer Brown ( hardware store owner) Nathan Hale (judge advocate general), among others A number of businesses soon opened up around town including: Agrimont & Harrison Druggists - early grocery storekeepers The first school in what is now Woonsocket was built on Meetinghouse Road behind today's Methodist Church by Reverend Mr Gosset in 1827 It wasn't until 1859 that The Mechanics School began teaching children grades one through nine In 1865 two brothers named Moses Green ran a small bakery called Mrs Green's Bakery which closed down around 1915 after many years in business
