The Coast Guard has been providing law enforcement and disaster relief services in Rhode Island since 1892. The first coast guard station was established in Woonsocket, RI in 1892. During the 1930s, the Coast Guard began purchasing new ships and developed a coastal patrol program. In 1941, the Coast Guard created its own air force to provide security for coastal areas during World War II. In 1992, the Coast Guard purchased its current vessel fleet which includes six commercial vessels and three military vessels. Today, the Coast Guard provides service to all corners of Rhode Island with a variety of missions including search and rescue; maritime safety; public health; homeland security; and environmental protection. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is one of the many partnering agencies that work together to promote maritime safety on our state’s Eastern seaboard coastline. In 2017 alone, DHS awarded more than $5 million worth of awards to businesses across Rhode Island from their Maritime Security Program Competition - marking an increase of over 20% from 2016! Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has maintained close relationships with local community organizations such as Saint John’s United Methodist Church & Providence Senior Center which have donated equipment or manpower to support coastal law enforcement efforts. These donations have helped keep our citizens safe on our state’s coastsides for centuries!

The name comes from an Anglican priest named William Woonsocket who came to America in 1637. He built a chapel there in 1724 and named his community after himself.
