The Rhode Island Army National Guard has been deployed in support of the United States military for over 70 years. The unit's history dates back to 1898, when the Providence Artillery Regiment was organized as a part of the Rhode Island Militia. In 1917, the regiment was redesignated as the 1st Infantry Brigade, Rhode Island National Guard and activated at Camp Hill in Woonsocket. In 1940, the brigade was again redesignated as 2nd Infantry Brigade and activated at Fort Story outside Providence. The brigade served with distinction during World War II before being disbanded in 1946. In 1990, the brigade was re-designated as 3rd Infantry Brigade and mobilized at West Point Barracks in Warwick. The brigade served with distinction during Operation Desert Storm and participated in numerous other operations since then. From 2006-2015, 3rd Infantry Brigade served with Task Force Yankee while also commanding Combat Outpost Little Creek located near Fall River. As part of its new mission statement which calls for "the deployable force that can respond rapidly to evolving threats," 3rd Infantry Brigade is now stationed at Grandview Armory north of Pawtucket and plans to become fully mobile by 2021.

The Rhode Island National Guard was organized on December 12, 1776 and began operations the following day. The Guard was later renamed to the Rhode Island Regiment in 1781. In 1814, the regiment was redesignated to the 1st Rhode Island Infantry Regiment and finally in 1845 as the 3rd Rhode Island Infantry Regiment. On July 8, 1898, militias of New England states combined into a single state under the name of America during the Spanish-American War and this change in name also affected military history of Woonsocket. The first unit to arrive in Woonsocket after America's declaration of war against Spain was Company K (1st Battalion) 6th RI Infantry which arrived on July 15th 1898.
Woonsocket, Rhode Island is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island. The population was 25,521 at the 2010 census. It is the 2nd most populous town in Providence County and the 9th most populous town in Rhode Island. Woonsocket is located on Narragansett Bay and 22 miles east of Providence. The first record of occupation of what is now Woonsocket Township was dated February 17, 1675 by Captains John Smith and Robert Chase during their expedition against Narragansett Bay for trade with that people. On October 30, 1686 by order of Governor Nicholas Fane it was platted as part of that colony's land grant to Captain John Winthrop and other Englishmen who had come overland from England with Rev. Samuel Adams in 1685-87: "It being agreed between us that this place should be laid out into lots thereof according to our number each having one lot …." In 1702-03 Gamaliel Eaton patented 8 acres (3 hectares) on which he erected a farmstead called Cedar Grove which still stands today within the limits of present day Woonsocket Township - an area now known as Eaton's Pond Park. In 1834 John Quincy Adams purchased 2 tracts totaling 10 acres (4 hectares) lying west and north of where Cedar Grove sits today from Gamaliel Eaton for $20 ($2/acre). Adams named his tract Quincy Plantation after his nephew President James K. Polk who also lived there at some point during his presidency (1849-1853). In 1845 Elisha Gray bought 5 1/2 acres (1 hectare) adjoining Quincy Plantation from James K. Polk for $60 ($10/acre). He donated this tract to the city of Providence as part of its donation program in memory of Elisha Gray Sr., one of the original settlers in Providenceeville who had moved to Woonsocket about 15 years earlier when he purchased three parcels totaling 12 rods [yards] near what is now Market Square for $50 ($4/yard]. When it became apparent that new downtown streets would not be built until after Congress repealed the death tax law it was decided to use these adjacent properties instead giving them their current name - Washington Street - honoring then 24th president George Washington and his wife Martha Custis Coles Washington along with many others associated with Boston's early development including Isaac Brock taverns on South Broadway and Anthony Wayne's shoe store at Fourth Street corner Live Oak Avenue southward just before Newmarket Road Viaduct opened up making all this possible! An incorporated village--Woonsocket--was established by act February 3, 1898; boundaries were changed several times through Act no’s 7152 AND 7511; population 21st century estimate 26,442." Woonsocket is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 26,876 at the 2010 census. Woonsocket is considered to be part of the Providence metropolitan area. The originalsettlement of Woonsocket was on the southern tip of Southbury Island and began as smallpox-infected fishermen who made their home from Mayflower wreckage during the first global pandemic in 1665. In 1837, Colonel Jonathan Tufts foundedTufts College in nearby Greenpoint and opened it as a seminary for teachers and ministers. Tufts also donated land for the present day Woonsocket Municipal Stadium which hosted both football and baseball games until 1992. In 1862, General John A. MacDonough fortified strategic points along Narragansett Bay with batteries including Battery Manning which overlooked Portsmouth Harbor and remained in service until 1898 when it was decommissioned due to lack of ammunition; however, its cannon still remains at Fort Mifflin today as part of National Memorial Park’s artillery collection. In 1865, four years after the Civil War ended, General Ulysses S. Grant visited Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on Narragansett Bay where he ordered construction begun on what would become one of America’s largest warships: USS Constitution (1869). Although not completed until 1887-88 following many delays caused by financial issues at Riverhead shipyards - including a fire that destroyed entire sections of Norfolk Navy Yard - Constitution eventually served as America’s first battleship majority during World War II before being decommissioned in 1946 after serving primarily in reserve roles throughout her career (the last US battleship to serve active duty). In 1847, Commodore John Fitch established Pawtucket Naval Shipyard on Castle island just offshore from Providence harbor to build merchant ships for his American Shipping Company; however, this venture failed because only two vessels were built before Fitch left for good in 1850 citing "a very large public debt". Atracer Samuel Jenks started commercial fishing off Newport beach beginning around 1800; however it would not be until 1903 when dredging commenced on Long Island Sound to improve water access which has resulted in over 120 lobster boats operating today out Of those operated by Mystic Aquarium alone!
