The Rhode Island Air National Guard's "Hometown Hounds" is a unit of the United States Armed Forces Reserve. The unit was activated on December 15, 1947 and its purpose is to provide support for the Rhode Island Air National Guard at home and abroad. The history of the squadron began with two World War II fighter jets that were donated by the town of Woonsocket to the USAF in 1945. A third jet was gifted by General Electric in 1973 to make up for an earlier gift from Boeing Company. The Squadron has also received various other military equipment and vehicles which have been used during Operation Desert Storm, Operation Restore Hope, Hurricane Katrina, and numerous other deployments. In addition, members of the Squadron have traveled to many countries around the world as part of international tours or appearances honoring America's military commitment to global peace and security. Throughout its history, RING has shown great dedication to service through donations both large and small; however, it is this sense of community that truly makes thisunit special. On Dec. 8, 1941, the United States Air Force was created as a result of the National Defense Act of 1940. The AF was initially stationed in Massachusetts and Rhode Island before being moved to Florida in 1942. On Feb. 15, 1948, AF Headquarters was transferred from Miami Beach, Fla., to Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. On Sept. 5, 1951, the first jet aircraft were delivered toAF at Wright-Patterson AFB. Inactivated on Aug. 1, 1992.
Woonsocket, Rhode Island is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 18,542 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in the county by total population and it is also one of the most populous cities in Rhode Island. Woonsocket is located on Narragansett Bay and has a rich maritime history dating back to its founding as a small fishing village in 1764. The first settler in what is now Woonsocket was John Winthrop who arrived in 1630 and built what is now called Winthrop's House on the present day site of the Town Hall. The original settlement was essentially an agricultural community with homes for about fifty people and several small businesses along Narragansett Bay. In 1764, when King George II of Great Britain granted land to John Adams for his new colony of Massachusetts Bay, Woonsocket became part of that colony. However, until war broke out between England and America over this issue in 1776, Woonsocket remained largely inactive as a political entity until 1781 when it became one of thirteen townships within Providence County under the jurisdiction of General Court. In 1814, following completion of construction on Fort Hatteras National Monument (later known as Haverhill Point), many residents move from their houses around West Warwick Avenue onto large landscaped lots overlooking Narragansett Bay for what would become known as "The Hill". This development led to the nickname "The Garden City" because so many people were living there during those years without any major economic opportunities or social services available other than agriculture which required significant inputs such as labor force from rural areas further away. -In 1862 general stores were opened east of Main Street including Mrs.'s Store operated by Margaret Gadsden which began serving tea and coffee from her house before moving into her own store across Main Street in 1865 -In 1871 coalmining began operations at nearby Smithfield Mines with local men working long hours underground while womenfolk cooked food over open fires using baskets made from willow branches
