The coffee beans were hand-selected by the town's mayor and stored in an underground vault until they could be roasted and shipped off to Rhode Island. The first roasting machine in Warwick was built in 1916 by John Ameda with help from his brother-in-law Dan Fenton. In 1922, Salem Coffee Roasters purchased a machine from Ameda and continued operating it until 1970. Since then, many different companies have operated in Warwick including Brown & Williamson (1948), Woonsocket Coffee Co.(1971), Providence Coffee Company (1977), Green Mountain Coffee(1982), B&B Beans(1991), Wadsworth Farms (2002). There are currently four roasting companies operating in Warwick: Blue Bottle Coffee(2008), King's roast(2009), Mt Vernon roast(2010) and Mr Bigsby's Cafe(2011). Additionally, there are several cafes located within walking distance of each other that serve coffee as well as pastries such as croissants or doughnuts
