The Rhode Island Naval Militia was formed in 1775 to protect the colony against any possible French threats. The maritime militia continued to be used during the Revolutionary War, and it is said that Captain John Smith gave his first command to a member of the RI Naval Militia. In 1776, Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Fiske organized a squadron of marines from Newport who fought at Bunker Hill. After the war, naval militias were disbanded but their traditions continued into the 21st century with local groups still providing support for military engagements or ceremonial functions in Rhode Island. As part of its commemoration of the navy's deployment in Warwick over 100 years ago, RI Navy Veterans has created an online exhibit which features artifacts and photos from this time period.

Navy Deployed Gift History in Warwick, Rhode Island: The Naval War College was established in Newport, Rhode Island on July 1, 1892 as the first naval college west of the Allegheny Mountains. It became an all-encompassing military school and training center for officers of the U.S. Navy. The Naval War College’s curriculum focused on military strategy and tactics, naval architecture, engineering science and technology, international relations, maritime law, amphibious warfare and air navigation. From 1922 to 1945 it also offered a graduate program in Naval Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) studies. The Naval War College was closed on September 29th 1945 by order of President Harry S Truman due to budget cuts that were made during World War II.
Warwick, Rhode Island is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 21,822 at the 2010 census. Warwick is the most populous municipality in Providence County and it is also one of the two towns in the county. The other town is Bristol. Warwick was first settled by English colonists in 1638. It became a part of Rhode Island as an act of Congress on July 12, 1790. The Main Street of Warwick runs through the heart of the town center and it has been named one of "America's Most beautiful Streets". The street was once home to many art galleries and museums including Brown University's Museum of Fine Arts and URI's Farnsworth Art Gallery before they closed down in 2006 and 2007 respectively. Many local businesses continue to operate along Main Street such as The Barnes Tavern which opened its doors in 1865, Pizzeria Bianco which opened its doors in 1957, Dunkin' Donuts which began serving food on December 1st 1959 (the day after Rhode Island became a state), Warwick Elementary School which opens its doors for kindergarten students every morning at 7:15am until 3pm (until recently this school had no recess), Stonington High School where wrestling meets each Saturday night; as well as several small stores that remain open year-round such as GASCOs Candy store (closed Dec 2017) One thing that has not changed much since Warwick was settled by English colonists more than 350 years ago are their churches - all three Anglican churches located downtown have been around since then too In addition there are multiple Baptist congregations scattered throughout the town with some dating back to 1638 while others began arriving during America's founding era There are also Methodist and Lutheran congregations present but they do not typically have services held outside of summertime or during special events like baptisms or funerals One interesting note about Warwick is that it has both an Indian Head Monument made from granite quarried near Providence Falls while also having a plaque honoring Daniel Webster who served as Governor from 1853-1857 Another building that remains standing today after being converted into a home for seniors Bakewell House underwent updates inside and out starting in 2009-2010 resulting in it now being considered one of RI’s newest housing developments called “Seniors Village”
